So they all had 3:73's
What about the 8cyl.>?? What are the options to change from 3:73 to a lower gear? Without removeing the rear end? Cheers

327 powered truck usually had 3.07 gears unless optioned otherwise. 283 and 6-cylinder trucks usually had 3.73. The only way to know for sure is to pop the cover, and the number of teeth will be stamped on the ring gear. 41-11 is 3.73, 43-14 is 3.07.
You can get your current rearend rebuilt, and i reccomend this if you can afford it. When you get a junkyard rear you chance that it will be worn out and have a limited lifespan. I learned this over Christmas when i put a used rear in my truck and it turned out to be junk. Although, a 12-bolt is a tough rear and i am sure it is possible to find a good one. Swapping rears is an easy job, even for a beginner. You can get it done in a day or two no problem for the first time. Anyway, he parts (ring and pinion plus install kit) run around $275 for decent pieces. Now, the labor is what gets you. Rebuilding rearend is somewhat of a specialtly, and not many shops do it. So it may be hard to find someone who will do it for you.

To change yours from a 3:73 to a 3:07 is more involved than just changing ring and pinion. The carrier that the ring gear bolts to has to be changed also. There is seris 3 carriers that fit gear ratios 3:50 and lower ie: 3:42, 3:07 and seris 4 carriers that fit 3:73 and higher ie: 4:11, 4:56. Good luck 70short/step

Randy's ring and pinion has the parts you need www.ringpinion.com or call 1 888 296 3129. you will also need a 3 series carrier for 3.07 gears, 3.73 are a 4 series carrier. I have good used and magnifluxed 3 and 4 series in stock if interested. In any case have the rearend shop check your axles for bearing and spline wear and install new bearings and seals in axles and pinion. Rearend shops here get in the ballpark 150.00 to 250.00 for the setup, a non posi rebuild with all new parts around 7-800.00, posi around a grand.
