uh oh
so i went out to my truck this morning, backed out of the parking stall, put in in drive and something went CLUNK!!! I could feel it in the floor so I'm thinking that it's the tranny. What could it be? (I'm not to mechanically inclined) It still drives fine but I'm sure that you can hear it from the outside.

does it do this clunk just when shifting into gear? these trucks are prone to having some play in the read end. park your truck, put it in nuetral (e brake set) and crawl under there and see if you can move your driveshaft around at all. if you can, your problem is with the read end.

Mine does that all the time. Esspecially in reverse. Sometimes it bangs hard enough to give me whiplash, lol
I know my rear end was put back together poorly, my grandfather broke it a couple years ago, and put a 4.10 gear in place of the broken 3.73 one. It drives fine, but clunks something nasty when I put it into reverse.

Yeah, mine does it into reverse pretty dang bad too. Wow. I never knew it was the rearend though... nice to know.

Mine did it pretty bad, then I swapped in a new rear end that was in better shape, and it pretty much went away.

Mine stopped doing that after I changed to the Eaton posi and new gears.

TH400s are known to engage pretty firm going into reverse. It could be a couple of other things that cause what you are experiencing though.

Bad U-Joints, Loose spline in tranny, High gears, bad tranny mount and out of adjustment rear brakes can all cause a clunk.
Slip yoke trannys are famous for a clunk. GM even had a special blue grease that got rid of it for a couple thousand miles. Brakes not being adjusted would cause a clunk when you come to a stop and then lift off the brake you would get a clunk and sometimes feel like therear just dropped. The suspension would bind up a little because of the brakes out of adjutment and the bag was it relaxing and tension suddently coming off the diff and drive shaft. I would make sure you U-Joints are ok. Maybe check the brakes and pull the cover on the diff and they not worry about it unless you start to get crucnhy noises or a whine around 45mph.

I know what you guys mean when it always goes clunk... our 81 farm truck did that alll the time to, but it wasn't as harsh as what I have now. I'll crawl under there this weekend and see what up.

Yeah, for sure don't let it go and not find out what it is. A bad u-joint can send you pole vaulting. IMO, noises are warning signs. When you hear one you haven't heard before, it's a warning something bad is getting ready to happen. Heed the warning.
