I am putting in a 454 in my 72 swb 2wd i read that small towers work with bb mounts and visa versa has anybody done this i have the 454 in there now with all sb towers and mounts only problem is driverside header is touching will the bb mounts fix that are do i call it quites and try to find some towers for a big block i have heddman truck headers will chevelle headers clear better

Unfortunatly we have the unlucky year of BB swaps. 72 had a different cross member/forward frame (not sure which), and the BBC mounts from other years do not work properly.

There are many threads on this. If you cant/dont want to make your own, your best bet is to search the board/ebay/CL for a pair of 72 only frame towers. Be warned though, I paid $275 for mine.

Performance online makes a tubular set up which they say will work, but I could not confirm with anyone if they work on a 72- I dont see how they could if they fit 67-71 frames with no modification.

I just purchased a set of 72 frame towers for my 72, which has a small block in it now. Will the BB mounts from the 72 bolt into the existing holes on the frame that the small block mounts are bolted to right now?

OK, BBC abd SBC will both mount to SBC mounts, but as you found out the headers hit. The BBC frame mount from 71 and down will work with the same motor mount as the SBC and the headers will clear. The 72 only BBC mounts is very similar to the 73 and up clamshell mount and it too will mount to your frame (may need to drill a new hole in the frame to get the frame mount bolted down) and it too will work with headers. I would use 73 and up mounts, replace the "inside" of the clamshell with urethane mount as the BBC will want to twist and mush the stock rubber mount. 73 and ups are a throw away from wreckers, get the flat plate frame mount that the clamshell bolts to and the motor side of the mount then you'll be done and the clamshells DO NOT SEPERATE if they fail like the SBC perch does, so it is safer in the long run, long winded but the best I can do good luck!!
