me and my 72 and my problems

ok i'm new to the site but i'v been work'n on trucks seriously for the last 6 years. ok i'm 20 years old and run my own custom shop here in florence al i do mostly custom body work and frame and suspention work. and befor that i worked for various body shops and the last place i was at built old tri5 chevys and funny cars so i'm a certified nhra tig welder. my truck is 72 c-10 that i got for my highschool graduation from my dad, we were ride'n in his truck and seen the 72 in a driveway witha for sell sign on it and the guy onlly wanted 600 for it so we got it (it was a piece) came with stepside bed and ac but thats all gone now. now the truck is flat black with the markers and trim shaved away along with the firewall (kept the door handles and the tailgate and lights trim) with a suicide hood and it lays the rocker hard (not pinch) thanx the a backhalf by me and z'd front frame with new bushings and everything striped and painted high gloss black. it has a 350 mild build ( have no idea whats inside it) and a 700r4 with the factory rear end. and now for the problems i drove the truck yester day for the first time in the 2 years i've owned and A the oil pressure drops down low after it warms up B the tranny does not shift into 4th C the turn signals dont work and did work about a month ago i also but a painless wire'n kit on it D i'm new to motors and for some reason i keep burn'n out spark plugs it has a holly 650 carb and electric fuel pump on it but i dont know how to adjust the carb or realy how to set the timeing. so sorry for the long post from the newby but this is a great site and i've read alot of the other post and yall seem to know more than me so any help would be great

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi! Post some pics of your truck. I'm no engine expert, but my uncle had a 350 that never showed much oil pressure and he ran it forever. I would put another gauge on it and check it to be sure your gage is reading right. The plugs burning up is probably related to the carb adjustment.

Does the 700R4 have a lock up torque converter? How did you set up the TV cable? The set-up on the TV cable is crucial to a 700's life. Is your shifter going into 4th? or is the trans just not shifting?

Re: me and my 72 and my problems

Do you know what pressure your fuel pump is set at? What spark plugs are you running? How low does your oil pressure go once warmed, and how high when cold?

Oh, welcome to a great site and get some pics posted when you can!

Re: me and my 72 and my problems

Does it stay at 25 while driving or just at idle? They (who ever they are) say the rule of thumb is 10 PSI for each 1,000 rpm is all that is needed.

Re: me and my 72 and my problems

for the oil pressure problem, does it have a FRAM oil filter? i have heard more people complain about low oil pressure while using them than anything. if so, go to NAPA and get their store brand filter to replace.

also, it's possible the oil pickup in the pan is clogged. When you swap the filter, you might pop off the oil pan and see if the oil pickup is clear.

Re: me and my 72 and my problems

How old is that 700R4? I've heard of many exotic break-in techniques here and other places to get it to shift to 4th. Also dittos on the TV cable, it is very crucial. You should do a search on a net and find the proper TV cable adaptor for your aftermarket carb to get the proper pull and angle on the cable. This diagram shows the correct relation between the cable and throttle.

You may also want to look at the info on these pages http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com...o/700R4p1.html they show how to fab a TV cable bracket, but the ones I've seen online are cheap enough and look better that's it worth it to buy one instead of make one.
