Sat pics(10-11) A stolen truck and a hot car.
At work I had somebody tell me about a 72 pickup that was for sale that sounded like one of those deals that's to good to be true..... I still had to check it out. I went by where I understood it to be and there it sat.
I couldn't get anyone to come to the door so I went ahead and gave it the old once over. The truck was super straight. Both inner rockers and cab corners were rust free. The outer rockers just have started to show a couple bubbles and I had no trouble getting a magnet to stick to em anywhere I put it. Perfect seat, perfect dash pad, tilt, full gauges and the factory radio still in the dash. Bedfloor and inside walls show use but are solid. The only filler I could find in the whole truck was a spot about the size of the palm of my hand right below the sidemarker light on the drivers rear. And a bigfoot pedal! Well, as you can see by the doors and the rearview mirror the truck turned out to be a 71. Also the price on the sign was higher than what I had been told it could be bought for. Still.......I'm interested. I make a quick stop on the way back home to see one of my buds who has truck fever pretty bad right now. I asked him if he had any $$ for a truck and he said no. After that my wife called (who had been out of town for nearly two weeks) and you can just guess how thrilled she was to hear I might be bringing home another truck if I couldn't find someone else to buy it. I finally get a hold of my lil brother and he said he'd take it if I could get it for what I had heard would buy it earlier in the day. A couple hours later I swing back by the owners place and get to chat with him. He quoted me a price that was lower than what was on the sign but still not as low as what I had been told from my bud.... So I went ahead and told him the price I had heard and who told me and he bit on it! I told him to pull the sign and give me til Monday when I could go get the cash from my credit union (Lil brother couldn't swing it until his next payday and I didn't want him to lose this deal). At this point I haven't even heard it run! He said it hasn't been driven in two years. He had installed a new cam, lifters, holley avenger carb, mallory billet distributor and hooker super comp headers and said it never ran quite right after that. As a matter of fact he said the engine was making a racket. I didn't care. This truck wouldv'e been a bargain without an engine or transmission at all. I figured it would be a steal if it would crank up and pull itself the couple of miles over to my house. The owner also tells me that he installed a set of the March performance serpentine pulleys. We couldn't crank it due to the battery being dead so I told him we'd be back Friday and to get his paperwork together. Turns out that it's a Texas truck with a texas title. It just keeps getting better! |

Re: Sat pics(10-11) A stolen truck and a hot car.
Well, I have to head off to the airport to pick up Christy and her brother and I play it cool about the truck. I wait it out a bit and let her know that this truck is a steal and I'm gonna spot my brother a smidge til payday. We talk about it and agree that it's to good of a deal to risk losing.....So she goes and get's the cash from her credit union account on Friday! On our way back in Friday evening we swing back by the owners place and he's had the battery on charge and I let him know I've got cash in hand. The truck fires right up and has a ferocious tick. I asked him if he though it would make it the couple of miles to my house and he just shrugs his shoulders... Well, I reach in and cut off the truck and told him we would be back in the morning when there is some daylight.
So my brother rolls up this morning and we head over there with a gascan,, toolbox and a towstrap. The owner has tossed a th400 in the back of the truck that he claims is good as well as the ramhorn manifolds he took off when the headers were installed. He also threw a set of chrome GM valve covers in the front floorboard. We pour in the gas that we brought and fire it up to hear it rattling away again. We filled out the bill of sale on the hood, counted him out some cash and hit the road! I kept hearing it pop and backfire now and then on the way to the house. We made it ok but I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't concerned. As soon as he cut it off he looks at me and said "well now what?". We went ahead and pulled the valve covers and saw that the #3 cylinder had a rocker arm nut that had all but backed off while the one next to it was nearly as bad. So we went ahead and backed off all the rocker arms and got #1 on TDC and went to town adjustin the valves! Also spotted a couple of ports on the carb that were missing vaccum plugs and took care of them as well. The guy we picked it up from had also mentioned that the brakes didn't work to well.... I guess they would have worked better if he had hooked a vaccum line up to the booster...... Anyway, we put the valve covers back on and hit the switch and we're gold! You couldn't ask for a better sounding engine. Time for a test drive. (Volume will help here) What the heck! Here's another one. Things are going so well we decided to try to wash the fungus and mold off that was growing on it. I think it cleaned up pretty good! Guys, I almost feel bad. The owner did tell us that he would rather lose his but on this truck than to see it sit there any longer ruining. (Thank you sir!)This guy really had no clue about what was wrong with his truck. This is a really nice truck! It looks like someone has replaced the drivers door at some point since it was built due to the paint not quite matching. The door that was put back on has some very minor rust in the bottom corners. Aside from that and the couple of bubbles in the rockers I could find no rust on this truck! All the cab mounts are new. All the bushings and tie rods look new. All the rubber on the cab is new. The bumpers, mirrors, headlight bezels, sidemarkers and taillights are new. The inner fender on the passenger side still has the price tag on it from where it was purchased. The truck was obviously painted while it was disassembled and still looks pretty good for a driver. Yeah, the paints blistered up on the hood from where the carb had caught fire but even with that blemish......We stole it! Feel free to guess away at what you think the magic number $ was. |

Re: Sat pics(10-11) A stolen truck and a hot car.
Sorry guys! Took me a smidge to get the rest of the story typed out.
Oh and here's the hot car I saw on my way to a lil get together this evening. Are you ready? Hot huh? As far as the price on the pickup.....What would it take for it to leave your driveway if it was yours? So yeah, Let's hear some speculation as to what it might be worth and then I'll be glad to post what we got it for. |

Re: Sat pics(10-11) A stolen truck and a hot car.
I think you'd be lucky to find a truck that nice that the owner didn't want 10 or 12 grand for. Not that it's worth 10 or 12 but ever since they started showing the Barrett Jackson auctions on Speed everybody seems to think their stuff is worth twice what it really is. I still think you got a $5000 truck for $2000 though. That was an awesome deal on a sweet looking ride. Slam that bad boy and everyone will be drooling over it

Re: Sat pics(10-11) A stolen truck and a hot car.
I spent some more time piddlin with the truck today. The entire bottom of the cab is painted black. It also looks like the frame has been sandblasted and painted as well. Someone put a lot of time in to building this truck at some point.
On a side note just for fits and giggles......The name that was on the Texas title is.....Jesus! No seriously, It was titled to someone named Jesus and then they sold it to someone named Juan. My brother said he might try to find a Buddy Christ statue for the dash. |
