Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

i'm 17, and to take care of the money problem, i take all the overtime at work that nobody else wants and watch that extra money roll in. it usually all goes into my truck once i pay for insurance and gas, (us high schoolers know that gas is soo cheap, yeah right.)

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

Also to save money, dont imidiate go and buy new stuff from catalogs. Example My truck had no power steering so instead of buing everything new I wen to a junk yard and was able to use everything from a 79 G30 Van, they charged me $40. Now I have power steering for 40 bucks. Try to work in a body shop, I saved tons of money by learning the tricks of the trade. And for my last piece of advice, whenever you desire something don't ever discourage your self because you cant afford it. Get creative, the problem is not that you don't have enough money, you need to learn how to make money. When i was 15 i started to detailed cars by appointments. when I was almost 18 I had a car wash on sat and sundays. I set up temporary tents at bussy locations with kids I hired. But don't ever hire friends, you can't fire them. You never get rich working for someone else, Period.

I'm 18. Still in school and starting to piece together two trucks. When spending cash try to do the necesities first... and the goodies in the summer when you have two or three jobs. LOL.

I'm not a teenager but I can still remember back when things were pretty tough cash wise around the house .... (raised poor.)

I'm really proud of you guy's digging in and making it work instead of crying about it. If you want something enough you'll find a way and it look's like you guy's have. Hard work pay's off .... LOL.

esll.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

reminds me of my younger days when I wanted to learn bodywork so bad that I started off sweeping and organizing a shop for a guy for "FREE", he said he could not afford to pay me but he would show me what he could. Still remember him today and see him every once in a while as he is an adjustor now. That was 23 yrs ago!!

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I am not a teenager, well maybe in my mind, I am just a shade over 60. I too have to take things easy and only work on my C-10 when the budget allows.

I am glad to hear that so many young people are interested in the old pickups.

My son got me into the 67-72 Chevy/GMC when he found the 71 C-10 for me for $600 last year.

I have 3 grandsons that have 67-72 trucks, two of them are twins that are 12. The other grandson is 21.

A good day is one when we all can spend time in my son's garage working on one of the trucks, it doesn't matter which one.

Cool to see all the kids on this site. They are the next generation to care for these trucks. When I was 16 back in '73, my first car (truck) was a '55 1st series I got for 200 bucks, which I borrowed from my dad. I didn't do much to it, but it sure was fun, and I have a lot of memories from that truck.

I'm 17 and for money last summer I worked construction and made over $6000 and I just got a $1500 tax return so that help lots. Right now I wash dishes at a restaurant for $9/hr. which helps with paying for stuff. Thank goodness my dad doesn't mind borrowing me money.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

i just turned 19 and dont care much about cosmetics so that helps alot lol. im a full time student and wait tables at a restaurant here in town part time. i paid cash for the truck and insurance isnt that bad either so gas is my biggest problem. you just have to stay within your means and like bayer said, get creative. if you want an example, check out my post in the Car Audio section http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=236176 if it were easy then we'd all have show trucks and INMO theres nothing more boring than a trailer queen.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I'm 17 & have way to many rides

I'm not gonna go into all of em, but here are a few

67 LWB (Check sig.)

59 Bug, with oval window grafted in (Lots of info to tell, but not gonna)

47 Studebaker M-Series truck (I have three, on & off project)

50 Ford F-1 (I got it for $100 bucks, future project)

I do odds & ends jobs occasionally & sometimes work for my dad
This summer I'm starting my own business, trenching (I have a Ditch Witch R-30) so that will make plenty of money once I get on my feet
After that I'll prolly start doing irrigation systems, to make even more lettuce

Got to meet "Tav" Sunday, cool dude & can't wait to meet up again

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I'm 24 (soon to be 25) now...
I bought my truck when I was 15. I had it "done" before I graduated High School at age 17.

Lots of hard work, lots of time spent, lots of not dating girls and just hanging with the cheapo gear head buddies.

http://slickorange.com

The only thing that has really changed from then to now is the aftermarket a/c is on it whereas I did have factory a/c (it was a non-a/c truck), the stereo system changed to the MP3 unit from a 12-disc changer in the glove box, and just a few other small things here and there. Nothing major.

It can be done. If your school offers co-op/youth apprenticeship, do it. That's what I did my senior year, and I started in the field I am now working in full time. The grocery store paychecks went quick.

Smile Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

iI'm not a teenagere anymore but, I still act like one some times. hehe.

I know it's rough (the money end of things). I started in this crazy automotive feild very young dirt track racing at the age of 14.

I now have a 14 year old nephew with a 68 short fleet. He seems to have his head screwed on straight and I hope it stays that way.

My best advise is just don't get discouraged, There are alot worse things to save and spend your money on.

Re: just wonderin how many teenagers are there out there?

I'm not a teenager, I just turned 30 , and I have a pretty good job and make a decent salary and I still don't have money for my toys. Between mortgage payment and all other responsiblities, there's not much for parts, so we still have to be creative even after we have job that doesn't require an apron or a headset. The key is just setting up a realistic budget and sticking with it. Make a parts priority list for the truck and save up your money and start from the top. Before long you'll have the bada$$ truck that'll leave the 50 foot long skidmarks in the high school parking lot.
