Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
I have a header going into duals that exit in front of the rear tires. I can't tell you manufacturers, my uncle built the truck before I got it. The mufflers I think are just turbo mufflers. It is loud, especially going down the highway.

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
I have a rusty pipe that comes off the manifold, that bolts to a rusty muffler, that bolts to another pipe that points out the back. There are also a couple of rusty hangers keeping the whole setup from falling onto the ground or shaking loose.

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
No it's a Clifford that I had powdercoated black. Coolant plate on top of that and then a Holley 390.

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
I guess the rusty exhaust must be popular because mine is just like the guys with the rusty exhaust.
One difference is mine has metal coat hangers to support the system. I used my '67 swb stepper with a '96bed with the rusty exhaust today quite a bit to carry supplies for the fence I am building. Since I am going for a stock look on my truck when I restore it, it will have the single exhaust similar to the orginal and an original style bed. Danny

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
I also have the rusty exhaust option. If I had more fun tickets I would run a set of headers and duals with pipes all the way out the back.Probably one of these header sets.
http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/aca...asp?catcode=44 I do have a 4 bbl mani fold for the 250 in mine but 390 carbs are a bit hard to come by and require more fun tickets. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/aca...?productid=108

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
Here's a pic of the set up on my 292. It's a set of Langdon cast iron headers from Stovebolt. (re PanelDelands link) They both dump out pretty close to each other and have 2" primary pipes. The cast iron also tends to keep the under hood noise and heat down. I didn't want to go all the way across the truck for duals, and didn't have many options for two mufflers, so I found a new (Mieneke) muffler that had a three inch inlet, and two 2" outlets. I don't know what this muffler was designed for, but I could see through it both ways, so I put it on backwards. I can't prove it, but I'm thinking I didn't hurt the flow much because of the flow-through design, and the 3" outlet. I put a smooth 45 deg down-turn on it just behind the cab and it has a nice subtle sound going down the road.

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
This is in my 63 Belair, but the same can be used in a truck.
Langdons cast iron headers (ceramic coated) Offenhauser 3 1 bbl intake 3 Weber Outlaw 2 barrel carbs 1 7/8 homemade exhaust Dual Smithy's glasspack mufflers I'm still in the process of finish welding the pipes and fabricating the carb linkage. I'll fab some tailpipes at a later date. The X frame is tricky to run duals on one side. |

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
I would either make one soundraspy and old school or go with longtubes into 2.25" dual exhaust, to an x-pipe and then some straight through mufflers. My preference for those being Dynomax Bullets and Ultraflos depending on how loud you want it. This would be an attempt at recreating the sweet exotic BMW inline six sound. You'd probably have to bump compression and rpm way up to accomplish this though.

Smithys on a 64 chevy van.
Pretty stout 250 in a nova. Now we just need Kyull to post up his exhaust clips. -Sam.

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
Smithys stay quiet for the long haul. Cherry Bombs get progressively louder as they age. I've run Smithys for 25 thousand miles and they stayed real quiet. Can't say the same for Cherry Bombs.
Choose what sound level you'd like.

Re: 6 cyl. Exhaust Setups
I'm really considering Porter Mufflers for my next build, either that or making my own steel packs somehow.
Check out Porter Mufflers - their sound clips are on V8's, but, they're a traditionally made muffler, and I like the sound personally. I want a throaty sound, but without that "june bug in a lampshade" kinda sound. So, it's a hit or miss deal with 6 cylinders. -Sam.
