Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
I know I had run across a thread where someone put a dash speaker grate in a dash that had none. I cant find that tread now, so many options pull up on search. Plus I'm sure its been done several times.
If you know of a thread that shows/talks about this being done, or if you did it. Can you point me to the thread please so I can do some research please?

Are you using the Google search box at the top of the page? It may have been in the Blazer and Jimmy forum as a lot of them didn't have the speaker slots in the top of the dash from the factory. LockDoc

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
I've never done it before, but I'd thing you could take donor panel from a truck in the junk yard. I'd think any way you go about it you'll want the windshield out. It's just a matter of cutting and grafting a section in or replace entire panel (my suggestion).

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
Thats partly what I am debating. I dont want to pull the windshield. Plus I'm also wondering if there are any holes/slits, etc under the dash that need done for the speaker bracket.

I think you would have to remove the windshield no matter what. The front of the dash is spot welded to the cab, under the windshield rubber. The speaker bracket mounts to the firewall and the back of the radio, unless you are talking about your Jimmy. Originally it mounted under the dash on the same screws as the heater controls, with special brackets. LockDoc

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
You might want to consider the aftermarket toe kick panels that come with either speakers or a provision for you to install your own round speakers. Only problem is that if you were using a stock radio you would have to find 10 ohm speakers that were round or have someone with some electronics background put a resistor in line to come up with the correct resistance. Without 10 ohm speakers, an original radio will be short lived. If you are using an aftermarket radio then that wouldn't be a consideration.

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
I knew the dash was spot welded under the windshield. I have the original windshield and I dont want to risk breaking it for a speaker. Ive seen pics of the underdash mount, but this truck was radio delete from the factory, so doubtful it had that even.
rsavage. Ive seen the kick panel ones, 3 issues on them.. 1. Had some in my s10, disliked them as I always kicked them. 2. Ive read they dont clear the ebrake bracket on this model very well. 3. I do plan on 4x4ing this, and dont want to risk them going underwater. |

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
I just don't see how you'll ever patch in anything in any way w/o removing the windshield...whole panel or just a patch

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
Sorry . Even for a patch, how do you cut it and how do you fasten it with so little space between the w/s and dash? If you cut the windshield gasket out you can r&r the w/s without risking harm. Does yours have stainless trim?

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
lts, that is for a truck. I posted this in the truck section as it seems to get more movement, and figured more people had done it in this section.
Appears nobody wants to chime in that they have actually done it. |

I'm not sure why you would think that... All of the trucks already have the speaker grille so the truck owners wouldn't have to do the modification??? Now I know there are a few Blazer & Jimmy owners that cross over but it seems to me that the chances of any that have completed the mod might be pretty slim. Good luck on your quest anyway, I hope you get lucky. And back to the top... LockDoc

I thought it was an option on trucks. But guess I was wrong.

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
Radio delete was an op...well,a lack of the optional radio, but I believe all trucks got the same top panel with the speaker grille in it. The dash got the blank cover and the cowl cover had no antenna hole.
As far as those corner speaker mounts in a truck goes...not exactly the simple solution considering it requires removing the fuel tank and custom installing one in the rear. pretty long way to go to gain a place for a speaker...or two.

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
I Have a 72 C-30. It didn't come with a factory radio but looks like the dealer may have added a basic unit. the dash has a speaker grill, but doesn't have the bolt holes on the fire wall. I would like to add those later, working on the how to!! OH, ONE LAST THING, the speaker is mounted on the heater box above the outlet.

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
Dale99 - Do you have a Blazer or Jimmy? If so, the dash didn't have the speaker grille cutouts even if it came with a radio. An under dash factory speaker was used. Here is a photo of one. They are hard to find but one comes up on the parts board once in awhile

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
yes I have a jimmy, and Ive seen the underdash speaker. Do not want that, I would like it up in the dash.
I got a patch panel and speaker bracket over the weekend from a junkyard truck. I will graft it in sometime. |

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
That will be a nice custom touch. I always wondered about using the K/5 speaker combined with the truck one for stereo (in a truck)

Re: Putting dash speaker hole in delete dash
This may sound crude but I didn't have a speaker to fit in the stock under dash spot for my stock radio. I cut the bottom out of the glovebox and put it in there temporarily 10 years ago. I have buddy buckets so I don't miss the storage. Chris
