What type of VooDoo is required to get the pin out of the door hinge?

I have a 71 with a loose top door hinge on the driver's side, and for the life of me I can't tap the pin out. Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.

By the way I'm replacing that '72 door with a proper '71 kind, cause apperantly 67-71 be all the same, but 72 have plastic molded panels instead of metal.

Mark the location of the hinges and remove them then take them to the vice and commence pounding. PB Blaster is recommended to loosen up rusty pins etc.

Pretty good chance it won't come out while in the truck without you causing damage to the truck. Mine were stuck so bad I ended up having to use a hydraulic press to pop them free.

You will want to scrub the pin bore of the hinge sections clean before you reassemble them too.

Re: What type of VooDoo is required to get the pin out of the door hinge?

I replaced the pins on a set last year, and one of the tips I read somewhere was to grind the pin flush with the hinge first before trying to punch it out.

I watched a video where the the bottom of the pins were bent over slightly after being installed to keep them from working out. Grinding them flush would at least prevent you from having to fight against the pin if this is the case.

I still had to get them red hot using a Bernzomatic MAP/O2 brazing torch to get them out, and I did the job in a bench vice.

I bought the correct GM wrench, so I could remove the hinges without removing the fender.

The GM "S" wrench has a part number of J-22585 if you wanted to look for one. It made the job much easier.

Heat!
It will knock right out. That’s what I did.

I cut the pin with a hacksaw in two places. The middle falls right out and with a little heat the other two pieces pound right out in a vise.

thank you all so much for the great suggestions, I am leaning towards the cut it in two places method, any idea where to find proper bushings, please don't say DORMAN, lol, they sell junk, their clutch pedal bushings on my '74 didn't last me a year and I geased them up proper too

Do not put in a vise and hammer it out. You will not drive the pin out but make matters worse. What you need to do get a oxy / acetylene torch and heat the pin areas red hot then quench it with water. Put in a press then they will press right out. this will not damage the hinge nor the pins. Again do not hammer on them . you will only damage the pins and end up buying other hinges.

I drill mine out in a vice. No hammering, no bending or braking.

It's been kinda funny reading some of these posts

Replacing the hinge pins takes about 5 minutes each using a hammer and vise . if you've only done one set in your life it's probably not a great idea to tell others how it's done .

Re: What type of VooDoo is required to get the pin out of the door hinge?

You cant do it on the cab.
You need a very good vise, your small harbor freight or vise with worn jaws isn't enough.
Heat may be required,
if you have to resort to drilling then send them out for rebuild unless your doing it in a drill press which is still a touchy job for most.

You need an air hammer with a pointed chisel bit to easily remove the pins.
Leave the penetrating oil alone, the places it goes is not where its stuck.

You can send them to me, i charge $115 to rebuild 4 hinges with new pins and bushings, plus return shipping.

Re: What type of VooDoo is required to get the pin out of the door hinge?

This is the easiest way . After marking the hinge so it goes back together in the same orientation ,

Open the vise just a bit wider than the top of the hinge pin .

Place the hinge upside down on top of the vise while holding it steady and SMACK the pin with your BFH it will drive the pin even with the hinge .

Using a punch you can then drive the pin a little further down exposing the Knurled section on the top of the pin

using a pair of vise grips grab the head of the pin and twist it out .

Separate the two hinge sections ,clean them up and install the new bushings .
Mate the two hinge sections together again ,insert the new pin with a little White lithium grease and tap the pin down to the knurled section and with a final SMACK drive the pin home with your BFH .

No clamping it in a vise , No heat, No saws, No Problems.

Soak in 50% acetone & 50% PS fluid for a week and they come right out with a punch.

Re: What type of VooDoo is required to get the pin out of the door hinge?

I used every trick I could find to get the pin out of driver side hinge. Vice, punch, heat, BFH, cut the head off, cut the bottom off. Finally cut between the two halfs in two places. Then drilled the centers out and peeled the remaining pieces out. They were not coming apart without a big fight. Used Dorman hinge off the shelf at auto part store.
