Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

I tore my old Longhorn down to the bare frame 25yrs ago, just to do a freshenup on a nice old west coast truck....about that time the wife started having babies(must have been sumpin in the water)! At any rate I picked with odds & ends on the old truck & collected parts for about 8 or 9 yrs, & everything just "snowballed"! After 10 or 12 yrs from start, she was back on the road & rollin, with a bunch of mods(check my signature). She is still not done, but time, patience,& staying away from the Harley....maybe 1 day crazyL

Just can't seem to stop? Welcome to the club/cult/disease. A drug habit is probably cheaper but can't be nearly as much fun!

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

another fool here. i told myself i was going to hack my truck together for fun, just weld in pieces didn't matter how they looked as long as it was safe. figured that if there was too much rot i would just abandon the plans for the truck. then i bought a brand new lq9 off CL. then a "new" cab and front fenders. and a whole new front suspension from the junk yard. and a hydroboost...and..uh....power steering box. and a repro rad support. then came the patch panels..................and now an ls1 gauge cluster that i am going to put in it. I swear, i feel like an idiot every time i look at my pile and realize how many patches i welded in the frame just so i can say i kept the original frame, including welding new tops to the cab mounts and fabbing up 2 new bed mounts. my bed is so gone i might have to do a whole floor with supports. this was supposed to be a beat old truck with power brakes and steering and fuel injection just to make it drivable. you, my friend, are not alone. keep truckin!

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

Bought mine a year ago in SC , drove it 100 miles of my 400+ mile journey back home to VA on a " newly rebuilt " motor when it decided to BLOW UP ! O K , I trailered it from NC back home with my head hung low & figured I would just throw another motor in it and GO . I get the motor out & WAIT , what the hell is that ??? Is that the fresh black engine bay paint peeling off in sheets , well sure it is . Needless to say my truck is now in a million pieces . I have never attempted anything like this before & often ask myself , " what have I gott"en myself in to " ? Well , I have"nt had this much fun in years ! Ya just gotta love these old trucks !!!

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

I was "Smart" this time around.. Bought a running and driving truck. Just last night, as I tripped over the stack of new parts I have purchased, I was thinking to my self it would be about the same amount of work to build it from the frame up. Cab mounts, new springs, sway bar, window regulators, new bumper and grill, new tranny mount, new 6.0 setup, new seats, new dash cluster, new driveshaft, new window rubber/felts, swap fuel tanks.. you get the idea. I hesitate to get started because I'm afraid it will turn in to a total tear down.

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

It's all worth it toward the end. I started fixing some 'small stuff' last year. Ended up fully gutting it. Pretty much replaced everthing at this point. She's all back together and drivable and man what a joy it is! I need to get her some new sheet metal and she's going to the body shop as soon as I can get my wife's mustang back from paint. As frustrating as she is sometimes, I sure love that old truck. They're never quite "done" but have fun with em anyhow.

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

I'm glad I'm not alone!! My truck was running and driveable one week before I brought it home. I told my friend I got it from that I didn't want the engine or trans, I'm an automotive machinist and I build transmissions, so naturaly I would want something of my own in her. As I was looking at the truck I decided to take care of the rust because I knew if I got the truck running and driving I would never tackle the body. So fast forward 5 years later and the front clip is off, the driver side is almost done and the passnger side rocker is cut off, I have a disc brake set up off of a 74 waiting to go on, a half built 383, and the trans I built ended up in my 88 GMC. I have decided to slap a 267and a 200r4 in it and get it to make some noise, I hope this will help me get motivated to get back to work on it.

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

I have a feeling I'm about to have one of these moments today with my wife's Mercedes. I'm replacing a CV boot, all tie rod ends, and doing brake pads. The dealer wanted $2500 to do this...I figure I can screw it up about three times for that price!

I understand that all too well. Took a running, driving 70 down to the bare frame and then after getting the frame back together sold it all in pieces

Got smart on my last build and finished up someone else's project that was already back on the finished frame

Planned to do the same thing on the current 72 Super BB build but after looking it over more I decided.....might as well.....those famous last words....

So i'll be taking my painted frame to a sandblaster so that it's not a driver but a show truck when I'm finished

Yall are 100% correct, but....when it is all together and running the way you envisioned it, all the crap, all the time spent, all the money spent...all that goes away when your driving your truck on a sunny day in the country.

Re: Did any body else have a " what did i get into " moment

I've about lost count of how many times I've had that feeling! I can't tell you how many times I've thought, "well, let's just take this apart and see what's wrong"!! It's a good thing there's books and friends, haven't seen very many things that can't be figured out over a period of time.

I know how you feel, I'm in the middle of leaf to coil swap along with d60 to 12 bolt. I figured I'd clean up and paint the rear rails while it was all apart now I'm thinking how I might as well pull the cab and clip and paint the whole frame....

I'm gonna fight the urge, I want to drive it soon.

Its not too bad, there are just a ton of rivets to drill out. You have to get the rear end, trailing arms, trailing arm mounts, shock crossmember, panhard mount, and a few other misc parts. If I was just tearing down and putting it back together I could have done it in a day or two, its all the other stuff I'm doing that is taking time....and the weather. If you want more info on the swap check out my build thread.
