'72 Jimmy- estimated value advice
Need some additional opinions on this one. I feel it's a pretty good value but would like to here some nationwide comments. I won't reveal the asking price right now as to not tilt anyone high or low.
SPECS: '72 GMC Jimmy 4wd, auto, a/c, 3.73 gears, cheyenne package It hasn't been screwed with much at all except a recent paint job and cut for full din stereo. Very original and complete. Seats and center counsel are in good to excellent condition for the age with original upholstery. Body is very straight. Floor pans and rocker boxes are solid. Motor still has all original accesories intact including heat riser tube, spark plug shields, etc... Newer dual exhaust. Runs and drive well. Steering a little loose as usual. Single wall top is in very good shape. That's the good. The not so good....dash cut for stereo, amateur rust repair of the rockers and right behind the doors on the quater. Looks like the rust wasn't serious but patches don't look like they'll hold over the long run from the back side. Will need to be redone. Door bottoms also had some rust that wasn't repaired well and the passenger door bottom seem is actually split where the door skin meets the inner door bottom. Driver kickpanel needs a patch. The rear hatch is cracked on the sides and will need repaired soon to prevent becoming unusable. All in all it looks very presentable as you can see. Looks great from 20'. For my purposes, I would look to drive it as is with maybe just a few maintenance items while I work on my other two projects or possibly pass it on to someone else from the board or ebay and maybe make a buck? (leaning towards keeping it, hard to find a decent optioned Jimmy that is not an offensive color!) So, fire away. Please tell me what you think a value on this one might be. If I do turn it, will probably not make much on what he said his bottom dollar is but we'll see.

IMO Based on how tight it feels and how well it runs, I would say $6-$7k.

I get the impression it is pretty low miles. Owner can't say for sure but based on the brake/gas pedals, seat upholstery, dash pad, center counsel, motor has never been touched, etc...seems it should be fairly low.

Let's keep in mind that to be real nice, will eventually need some amateur bodywork redone and probably another paint job. Probably toss in some new carpet, side panels, detail the engine, the list goes on.
Forgot to mention the rear end was recently rebuilt. (might put a dent in my low mileage theory!?)

Looks like it is in pretty good shape. Nice and original. I'd guess in the $6-7K range also. Minimum of $5K if the rust is worse than the pictures show.
Did it originally have the lower body trim? If it were a Blazer of that level, it most likely would - I'm not sure about Jimmy's though.

I would have replied with quite a bit less than others so far. It does need lower trim.Very decent start on driver or resto. but in my opinion all that adds up fast. Seat covers redone sometime. They need scroll to be original. Not cutting it down, would love to have it for right price like everyone else!! Take trades for some 68 sheet metal?

Hard to tell from the picture how much that floor is rusted. Mine looked like that with the carpet in it. When I got into it, it needed a lot more work.
I'm thinking the $3K - $4K range. |

I didn't take a magnet to it yet but I did crawl underneath and felt way up on the quarters. No dents. He said it was incredibly straight when he got it before the paint and I believe him. He didn't do the body or paint work. He actually traded it to a guy and then bought it back from him after the paint was done.
I pulled up the carpet some in the rear and did notice some slight surface rust around the wheel wells but should clean up easy. Floor looked very nice with shiney original blue paint other wise. The pic of the driver kick panel makes the floor look bad there but it is solid. Most of what is in the pic is residue from the kick panel. The doors do need some work. The more I think about it, looks like they sandblasted the rust but didn't fill or add any metal after that. Mainly that pic of the kickpanel with the door corner in the background looks just like rust that has been blasted away.

O.K., enough playing around I guess. I'll give my opinion. I feel right now it could be worth about $4500 (only for someone who wants it just to look decent and doesn't care to fix it up anymore than that). With a little cleaning, new carpet, everything checked out well, maybe $5 to $5500. Of course if I want to do some new patch panels and a $3K paint job, might get into the $9K range (that won't happen unless I plan on keeping it for the long run
The guy is asking $4K and said he'd take $3600. That is probably right at what I'd want to give for it Even though it might be worth a little more. I want it but I don't need it. Would rather drive that around town than my 454 Suburaban though. Not a gas thing so much as a cool thing. I'll give it a day and see what some more people think before I decide for sure. Have to convince the wife too! Thanks!

I would say that if you can get it for $3500, go for it. Something tells me $3250 cash on the barrel, and the other $250 in your back pocket would work. If it doesn't, pull out the other $250
It is hard to go wrong at that price when the body is at least half decent, and it has some desirables, (air, original engine etc.) JB |

I would say $3k to $3500 is probably a good price, it sounds like you know where to look for the rust. However, some of that can't be seen until you take things apart, don't care how carefull you look. That's what you would pay in N. Cal for a similar rig.

Have you bought it yet?
In the end, the price came down to 'reasonable' for a daily driver. Have you seen the torsion boxes up close? Windshield frame? If you were to take it to a body shop, I bet you'd get better than 2K tied up in rust repair easily. That's before paint. Great start though, looks complete enough to be a nice truck. So, did you buy it yet? |

Jason, the one I bought last year out of Michigan, had similar repairs---front of rear quarters, a floor panel---period. Paid $4,400. and it was all done real decent.
Look at blazers real careful as swaping big stuff is tough. Front clip, doors, are no brainers as it's all available new or from trucks. The tub, firewall and windshield frame are the critical things that are hard to find and expensive to get/install. Given the pictures, my bet as to additional rust unseen, and a slight deduction for GMC ===____.$3600. would be my top $$ if I needed it for a driver. For resale, it will take more work/parts then you project as they ALWAYS do. The hatch will be a tough fix where it's opening. If you're expecting better gas mileage--not sure that will happen either as the 350-350 with 373's will probably give you around 10 mpg in town. Of course, buying it and storing it somewhere will give you a better return on your $$ then the bank would so you can always use that approach on the love muffin! hehehe Good luck---Huck |
