Re: 5 lug axel conversion kit
You might be able to find a 71-72 whole rear end for less money and less hassel seeing they are bolt in's.

Re: 5 lug axel conversion kit
I just did mine last week, see it here:http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=302652
I used my stock '64 axles. You have to turn down the center of the axle hub to fit the brake drums(I used '72 c-10's from O'reilly's $26 each) and 5 on 5 wheels.Weld one stud hole, use the drums to see which one and to mark the new bolt pattern. If I remember correctly I used a 17/32 bit.A carbide bit really helps on the welded hole.On my axles I also had to grind the back side of the hub so the studs would seat properly. When I removed the spider gears to take the axles out I found one of them was in bad shape,so I installed a posi unit I had been saving for it. I had access to a lathe, drill press, and the drill bits,so other than the drums, studs, rear diff lube, and a lot of labor mine was free. Maybe in retrospect that price dosen't seem too bad!!! Re: 5 lug axel conversion kit
I did mine in a '65 rear-end. It was easy as pie, I bought it from ECE and it was much easier than searching for another rear-end. Pull the inspection plate. Unbolt the diff and the gears, slide the big pin down, push the axle in, the clip drops, pull the axle out, slide the new one in and go from there. prety easy.

Re: 5 lug axel conversion kit
Ok cool, i was talking to a guy that put a 72 5 lug rear end in his, he said he wish's he got the conversion kit because the 72 12 bolt is like 1 1/2 inch's wider so if he corners real hard he still gets tire rub (even after rolling the fenders)

Re: 5 lug axel conversion kit
You guys relize that it is only 3/4" on each side. Also what kind of back spacing was he running. also did he lower it without using an adjustable panard bar. I have the 72 rearend in my truck and it did rub on the left side but I had a stepside bed which is much more narrow then a fleetside bed and plus I never put my adjustable panard bar in, which I still have new in the box for about 7 years now.. With my fleetside bed the tires are not even close.
