Redrill to 5x5
I am interested in having my axles redrilled to 5x5. I am wondering what everyone is using for rear drums on a 5x5 setup that has been re drilled, and what size i would have to have the hub turned down to clear them. I dont suppose 73-87 rear drums fit right on there. I plan on running 5lug rallies, and only want to switch to 5lug for the front disks does anyone see any other glaring issues with this plan?

I plan on doing the same thing to my rear end. I suppose newer drums will work. I am going to take a few measurements and compare them to drums on a 5x5 setup. The center needs turned down to fit the drum and wheel center hole. If I remember it needs turned down from 3" to 2.5".

I guess if i get a chance tomorrow i will take some calipers, a camera, and a notebook to the junkyard tomorrow. I have a funny feeling that i wont be getting a straightforward answer after searching for a few hours more.

I need to do it also. Any regular automotive machine shops can do it or is it more for industrial type shops?

I would think that anyone with a lathe and a drill press could do it, whether they will or not is a completely different question.

Also you need to remember to switch to 1/2" studs. 6 lug axles have 7/16" studs.
You will need to turn the center down for the drum and wheel to fit.

I would think that most job shop machine shops should be capable of drilling the axles and doing the machine work on the drums.
It may be that 71/72 rear drums will work if you cut the centers and they may not need cutting. If you can't find a shop locally any of the axle shops redo or build axle shafts Can do it and for most of them you can ups the axles to them and they have fairly quick turn around. I did it,(my friend did it for me) redrilled, mach'ed down the center, measured the center of the brake drums i was going to use and used drums of a 72, measured the shoes and confirmed that 72 drums would fit.

I did some digging at work today, and other than some weird options the brake drums for 71-87 trucks and vans are all the same listing. Meaning go to the junkyard find a GOOD set of OEM drums off of a newer truck or van and have them turned, presto good quality drums (better than the cheap Chinese junk) for cheap.
