2000 and up rear end in 1972???
Has anyone ever swap a 2000 and up rear end in to a 67-72 ?

i was just looking into this. i have a 72 with a 90ish 14-bolt industrial rear end sitting under it so it doesnt drag on the ground, but its set up for leaf springs. i found a place that sells the trailing arm perches for 45 bucks a pair, was going to have a guy i know cut off the existing perches and weld on the new ones so i could use the rear end. i really didnt want to go that huge tho, especially with the lack of clearance under that huge pumpkin. i found and bought a 72 10-bolt posi rear end today, so i got the size (and clearance) down but its still set up for leaf springs. ill still have to get a guy to put new perches on for me.
seems like the main issue to me would be the perches and the brakes, but it wouldnt be much different than doing a rear disc swap i bet. i dont recall there being any special stuff on newer axles tho, mebbe im simplifying it. |

Make sure you measure the width between WMS on the Diff. I measured one out of a 2005 2500 for a project I was dreaming about and it was quite a bit wider than the stock one. Like 5 inches. Just saying, you don't want to get into a situation where you have to have it narrowed. Not something you want to do.

I only ask...Why? The stock 12 bolt is stronger than the 10 bolt in the newer trucks.

While the rear in my 00 Z71 has been just fine, they're not known to be a great rear axle...
And they're much wider like mentioned above. Not only are the new trucks a lot wider, the axles are pushed out damn near to the fender wells.

I don't have the 12 bolt anymore and have the newer one sitting around. Thinking of getting a ford 9" now .
