C-30 Rear Brakes?
I need to replace a drum on my c30 longhorn.
I do have a couple of question though.... 1. are the brake drums the same for both the corporate and dana 60 rears? My longhorn has the corporate rearend. My local autoparts store only has one part number for a '69 c-30? 2. what size is the large nut that needs to be removed to get to the drum off? Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
IIR Eaton and Dana use different drums. Dana is usually held on with 2 countersunk screws. Eaton is different - I don't have one - I don't know.
I do know Dana.

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
Not only are they not the same drums, but you probably won't find any new drums. They haven't been made in some 20 years or so. I even have a contact here locally for real hard to find brake parts, he hasn't seen SRW one ton 67 - 72 Corp drums in at least 15 years.
Personally, I say it's time for an upgrade. That's my plan. I still have about 2 years on my brakes, then it's do or die. |

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
Longhorn Man - What are you going to upgrade too? Dana 60
If so will it bolt in and the existing drive shaft work with the Dana? What are you planning on doing?

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
If I can get my hands on a Dana out of a big block truck... I'd be beyond happy.
Other than that, i haven't thought about it too much. I still have 2 years or so. |

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
Why a BB truck? They came on 3/4 4x4 and some GMC 3/4 2wd's.

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
Actually Dana 60's would have a 3.54 ratio behind the big blocks(usually). I have 2 and they are both posi but neither are longhorn axles.
But I do have 2 very nice single rear wheel drums which came off a longhorn axle. I am thinking they are 71-72 though which would be wider than your 69's. If shipping to Canada doesn't kill it or the wider drums drop me a PM.

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
Sound like a long-shot but call these guys up. http://sacramento.citysearch.com/profile/1233404 Wish I could remember the name of the ole guy that helped me... But they did not mind going to the books to look for parts and they were CHEAP.
Edit: They specialize in heavy vehicle clutch and brake parts. They are not a maintenance facility. Found their website. http://www.ccbparts.com/default.htm

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
Update......
Well Longhorn Man, I took your advice and went looking for a new rear end. Went out to a firends today that had a '78 14 bolt rearend. I looked at it and took some measurements. Then he suggested that we go to his neighbours who had lots of old stuff. If he didn't have a 71 c20 behind the barn. I bought the complete eaton rear out of it for 60 bucks. I figure one of the drums should be salvagable for my truck. Question - How is the availablity of brake components for the rear (besides the drums)? and are the front brake components still available and standard for all c30's? Thanks alot in adavance !!!!! I just want to get her on the road....I can't wait!!!!

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
there are disc brake kits available for the Eaton, to me it would make more sense to swap to disks than get a whole new axle which may have different gears.

Besides, disks in the rear are kinda pointless (onless you do alot of mud runnin) and you'd still have an outdated rear with impossable to find parts. Good to go... with the exception of seals, pretty much EVERYTHING will be a PITA to locate for an HO72. From drum to drum, and everything in between. |

D'oh! I keep thinking we're talking about 4x4's...but we're talkin about 2wds. So finding matching gears doesnt really matter As far as the impossible to find parts...as a CarQuest employee, I couldn't disagree more. Drums, ok...but the other stuff can be had. There was an Eaton part # thread a while back in the 4x4 forum, alot of good info there.

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
They measure just about the same. I can't recall the exact number, but they are very close. I will be on the yard tomorrow, and I will pull a tape on them. I was going to use the 3.30 geared one in my '67 C-30 until I decided to go with '92 C3500 chassis with an OD tranny.
Another good alternative is 3.42 geared 14 bolts. Down here, in the early 80's, Alabama Power used to order tons of 3/4 LWB stepside P/U's with 250 L6 / SM465 4 speeds, and 3.42 geared 14b FF's. I'm sure a lot of these trucks were spec'd out the same for other municipalities, park rangers, civil service, etc.

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
3.42s would be perfect with the caddy engines

Re: C-30 Rear Brakes?
OK, then please prove me wrong... I just went through this last year, have one of the best NAPA guys you can find.
Get me the price and avalability for the shoes, adjuster kits, hdwr kits and brake cylinders for a 70 SRW one ton without dana axle. (9000 GVW, 7200 rear) Last year, I replaced one set of shoes, 3 brake cylinders, springs/hdwr kits all around, 2 adjusters, 4 seals, 2 inner and 2 outer bearings for the front, and I think that's about it... I was out $500 (that is with a prety decent discount) when it was all done and over... and I still have 4 old drums, front shoes are old, and one brake cylinder that can pop any day. Not trying to be cockey here... just I spent a small fortune on junk that is still marginally worthless. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 05-01-2006 at 09:04 PM. |
