What steering gear can i use???
alright guys you were extremly helpful on the coloum so what steering gear can I use to convert to power steering? Will a gear off a 80's IROC?? with quicker steering ratio? Thanks for your help!

I think you are limited to getting one off a truck...but I may be wrong.

the car steering gears are completely different and can't be used. i was told by a guy at classic chevy that any one will from a 73-79. 80-87 went to metric. they may interchange to but you will need the whole set up and then change the brackets to short water pump style.

The ratio on the truck power steering boxes is quicker than the manual boxes in case you didn't know...........Zoomy

i just used i from an 87 you have to move the alt to the other side need long w/pump and all the brackets&pullies&pump they went from flare to o rings works great

I got one from a 76. You can use the newer one by having your own hoses made as well.
Went that route on a 4x4 one time, just crimped the right end on the hose at the parts store. Much easier than changing everything else.

Thanks again for all your help all you guys have been great.
I am going to get one off a mid 80's and It's getting all the late model brackets and serpentine belt. Also going with TBI with aft axle tank. will post some pic when i get them and keep you all posted.

if you are going to the serpentine set up, either grab the water pump or get a new one for a newer truck.
They are all reverse flow pumps when they came with a serpentine belt set up. |
