3/4 question

I was checking out a buddies truck today that he bought last week. 1972 gmc 2500 2wd. My question is did they make a light duty 3/4 with six bolt? I was surprised to see that his truck had the 2500 badge but six bolt rims. I didn't spend any time looking under the truck it was wet and muddy.

Re: 3/4 question

What is the other 1/4 of your question? Sorry, couldn't resist. Only GMC 1500s and Chevy 10s had 6-lug. All 2500/1500s had 8-lug. There have been changes made to that truck

Re: 3/4 question

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. I thought I'd ask just to be sure.

Re: 3/4 question

I didn't check. I thought it odd. I know they made a light duty 3/4 ton some time in the mid 90's that was a six bolt because a co worker had one. That was the first time I'd ever seen that. I thought I better ask. To my knowledge in 72 2wd was either 5 bolt for 1/2 ton or 8 bolt for 3/4 ton. My buddy also said it was a 350 with a 4barrel carb. When we popped the hood the first thing I noticed was a 2 barrel carb so he missed on that. I need to get some numbers off the motor and run them. I think it might be a 327 or 283 in the truck. He bought the truck from a widow. It was her husbands truck she couldn't tell him anything about it.

Re: 3/4 question

My '83 K20 is a light 3/4 because it does not have full floating axles. It is 8 lug, but has c-clip axles.

Re: 3/4 question

I think the 3/4 camper special didn't have 8 lugs. Its been 20+ years but I remember a guy I worked with yanked out the Dana 60 when it died and replaced it with a 1/2 ton axle. Memory could be fooling me but I recall it being a 6 lug. Being a 72 it should be a 5 lug pattern for the lighter truck parts. When front discs came out they dropped from 6 to 5 lug.

Re: 3/4 question

Thanks guys. I've been around these trucks a lot over the years. I'm the 60-66 guy in the family and spend most of my time on that part of the forum. My younger brother is the 69-72 guy. I've only owned one 69 and it has six bolt wheels. It was awesome. Said brother owns it now. I've worked on these trucks with my brother. My buddies truck had a couple of things that jumped out at me the 6 bolt thing was one. He has to get an out of province inspection for it and I think he's asking for trouble. I still haven't had a chance to get back and check it out a little better.
