New guy here - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, what can I really say except I've always wanted a classic and now I have one. Got a great deal on a 1971 SWB with a 1996 vortec motor and 3 speed converted to the floor using a lokar shifter. The motor was built with an Edelbrock package. The transmission was rebuilt using stronger materials. I look forward to hanging out with you guys here. Don't get upset if I come up with some stupid questions.

Already added power brakes and power steering. Put in a new sending unit for the gas guage, and ordered front and rear sway bars. Also have new drip rails to weld in. Prior owner was going to shave them and never finished. Next on the priority list is A/C and swapping out the rear end for a posi unit with a 308 gear. That 3 speed transmission and 411s is tough on gas.

What's the best way to get the speedometer to read correctly? I've tried the gears in the transmission. I've heard about an adaptor, but haven't been able to find any on line.

The power steering was already done when I bought the truck. I'll see what I can find out from the mechanic I bought it from. He's a good friend of mine. I can see they had to trim the inner fender to complete the install. If I forget to get you the information, kindly yell at me again and I'll get back on that for you.

Where at in NW Florida are you?

Anyone have tricks to keep the gas smell down in the cab? I'll do the bed tank sometime, but not right now. It's even worse now that I've changed out the sending unit.

My truck had that smell when I bought it. I removed the tank and sure enough there was a small pin hole in the tank. I had it repaired and it doesnt smell at all anymore. Welcome to the board!

I think the smell is coming from the fabbed up adaptor we made to get the new sending unit to hook up to the feed line.

I bought a new sending unit for a v8 not thinking the truck originally had a straight 6. The v8 sending unit had a bigger connection. We used the old sending unit connection and the size for the new sending unit with a piece of fuel tubing. Soddered them together and hooked it up. I'm going to tighten it down some more, but it that doesn't take care of it, I have a plan.

First, petition the wife for more funds this month for the truck. Then buy the rear tank kit.

If that fails, then use rubber fuel line with some clamps because I'll be doing the rear tank conversion at some point.

better make sure you dont have a pin hole leak somewhere,,or even a bigger leak...since i havent got mine rinning,,i havent ridden in a truck with the in cab tank since i was a kid..so i dont know why it would smell...
