1983 Scottsdale fuel issue

She idles fine and drives fine but once I hit around 50+ she starts to choke and feels like the engine is "pausing" but once I let off the gas she is fine. What's the issue?

I'm thinking something with fuel. My fuel filter is cross threaded on my carb but that had been like that for awhile. The issue just started about two weeks ago.

Sounds like several things. Fuel cap could be plugged and not allowing proper venting of the tank. It is supposed to allow into the tank, but not allow gas out of the tank. They get dusty and dirty and corroded etc over the years. A vacuum will build up in the tank and then the fuel pump won't overcome the vacuum. Tank has gotta vent. Gas caps are cheap. Rubber gasket is old and brittle if gas cap is old anyway. Try that.

Also, your rubber fuel line between the fuel pump and the chassis steel line may have a small hole or a tear and she's sucking air under acceleration. Check that. Fuel filter could be dirty, but not as likely as the gas cap being bad. Try the easy things first before replacing the fuel pump.

Also, if you have installed an inline fuel filter in the fuel line, check that. It could be clogged.

I'm guessing not.

If the problem is that you've got a leak and it's sucking air, then the cleaner won't help that. And if your problem is that you've got a clogged fuel filter, the clog is probably due to rust or other undissolvable particulates, and the cleaner won't help that either.

Well I drive it to the gym and back and noticed a heavy fuel smell and checked under the truck and was leaking heavily from the front of the engine near the header.
