What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
This is one we are going to get for some parts. I have NOT seen it yet. Im told it the "original V8" for this 1967 GMC. Im doubting that for sure. I have NEVER seen this configuration on the manifold. What is this engine? The manifold and fuel pump have me baffled.

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
At a glance my first thought was that it looks like a GMC V6,but I read V8. Well, judging by it's length from the firewall and distance back from the radiator it's got to be a V6. There's just not enough room for two more cylinders.

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
Transplanted 348 or 409 if it has 8 plugs. I've seen a few. These truck have been around for a long time and few are as built.

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
348 and 409 were not made after 64 or 65 They also had the oil fill in the manifold I had a 409 which I had put in my 63 1/2 ton It was a monster and could not keep tires on the truck. I think they went to the 366 in the bigger trucks around 65 66

Found another picture of a 409 on my computer Notice no fuel pump on side of water pump and oil fill is in front of intake manifold

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
Are you sure the 348/409 was used in light duty trucks? It might well have been, I've just never seen one outside of the Impala line (and Canadian Pontiacs).

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
The 348s and 409s have a similar shape valve cover. But,come on,you guys have looked at enough engines to now each cylinder adds 5-6 inches to the length of an engine. A V6 is a shorter engine. Look at those shown and see how far back from the radiator support the front of the engine is. And,look at the master cyl/booster and how far past that the front of the engine is...not much. They never put big blocks in trucks before 1968. The 348/409s were the first big blocks. They didn't put V8s in GMCs in the '60s till a small amount later in '67. They were all I6 or V6.

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
Looks like a V6 to me.
A few years ago, I saw photos of a GMC V12 from the 60's. It used a 12-cylinder block and 4 V6 heads. 2 intake manifolds. 2 distributors for the ignition. The heads and manifolds looked like they came right off a 305 V6.

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
There is absolutely no way that motor can be confused with a 348/409. Valve cover shape is wrong, fuel pump location is wrong, manifold is wrong, the air cleaner looking supposedly stock is also wrong. The huge space between the radiator and water pump is a dead give away. Oh, and the water pump is grossly wrong for a w head engine as well. Not to mention the 348 was a large motor in its own right that would have filled that engine bay up.

Re: What engine does this look like? I know I know...just look.
It was basically two v6 put together, The block and crank was of course different, but it used the V6 heads and pistons and rods.
Great example on youtube. would like to find one. |
