67-72 chevrolet tailgates

...just wondering if there are any difference w/ 67 to 72 Chevrolet fleetside tailgates? Also, how can you tell if a tailgate is NOS/original vs. aftermarket/reproduction ones?? I'm going to be checking out a tailgate today and would like some tips. Thanks!

Re: 67-72 chevrolet tailgates

GM used the same tailgate for the Chevrolet from 67-72. The best way to tell NOS from a reproduction is if it is in it's original packaging. If not hopefully it will have a part number sticker still on it. Other than that it is hard to tell them apart, especialy if you don't have a reproduction to compare it to. WES

The NOS ones will have a sticker of course (unless removed). On the originals there are spot welds along the sides that are visible and in the channel below the handle and above the lettering on the originals you can see small indentations where the spot welds are. Hers a couple pics.

Re: 67-72 chevrolet tailgates

Rick had a reply a month or so ago on some of the differences (I remember 68 had a raised portion on the inner edge that was broken instead of continuous.

Maybe he will chime in.

Here is a little info on repop vs. original.

sameyrasmea72...which year is which base on your pics??? No lables just one having a longer valley than the other. Also, I don't think there was a sticker, but he did mention that the pass. side may need to be spot welded again. So...repos don't have spot welds and are smooth??

the recessed area appears to have a different angle as well as the length of the recess on the ends appears different as shown by the length/angle of the lines...

The arrow on the brighter red gate points to a distinct ridge on the tailgate, the other arrow points to no ridge but to a simple bend in the sheet metal.

The sloped area that follows the line on the brighter tailgate in stretched longer than the sloped area of the other gate.

Re: 67-72 chevrolet tailgates

"So...repos don't have spot welds and are smooth?? " In the reproductions I have seen they don't have the indentations were the spot welds are in the valley area. The originals and NOS ones i have seen all have slight indentions spaced every few inches were they were welded down thru the valley and the repros were completely smooth. I don't know if they are all like that or not? As far as the side spot welds I am not sure, maybe someone else has an aftermarket to look at. I only have an original and an NOS.

Re: 67-72 chevrolet tailgates

It has been my experience that repops are alot lighter than originals. Just thought I would throw that out there...
