brake issues.

so today i hopped in the truck and let her warm up, because i needed to move her for the snowstorm thats headed our way. reguardless, i was backing it to the spot i wanted it, and hit the brakes, and the front right tire skidded. at that point, i wasnt where i wanted to be, so i pulled forward, backed up, and it did it again. it happened over 10 times, and i need to know whats wrong with them, because i really dont want to go the replace every part route. thanks in advance!

best way is to take tires off and get inside the brake drums and inspect your brakes

i did that last week. the drums were replaced less than a year ago, and the pads are almost new too.

they must b fine then nothing wrong with them

im not an expert at brakes, but they are definatly NOT fine. when i say the tire skids, like it throws the whole truck around. and only that tire locks up. and if it matters, they are manual brakes, 4 wheel drum

Re-bleed the system and re-adjust the drag or clearance of the shoes and take her for a spin with several stops, then re-adjust the drag/clearance.

Sounds like a leaky wheel cylinder even though you have new shoes and drums. Look for any evidence of brake fluid on your rim or tire. You might need to pull the drum off. If you find brake fluid you'll need to replace the cylinder and the shoes on that side.

I vote on the wheel cylinder also. My truck did that skid thing a few weeks ago and when I checked one of the front wheel cylinders, a little bit of brake fluid spilled out when I peeled back one of the outside pieces of rubber. When I took the wheel cylinder apart there was surface rust on the inside bore and cup, in addition to the small leak-by. I went ahead and replaced both front cylinders and the truck is braking good.

do i in fact need to replace the shoes on that side? like i said they're almost new.

There is no way of completely removing brake fluid soaked into the shoes if that is the case. And no more than a set of shoes cost why would you take the chance?

I would also add that it could be something other than the wheel cylinders. As I previously said, I had replaced the front wheel cylinders and it was braking good. But then, today it skidded again. I decided to check the back cylinders and one side looked okay. But the other side there was oil all over the place, not yet enough to leak out of the brake drum, but enough to coat everything. The axle seal is leaking and I think this is the real cause of the occasional skid, at least in my case. Good luck.

its not an occasional skid. its every time you stop unless you go REALLY light on the brakes. and when i mean really light, like on a flat area taking 60 feet to stop and it wont do it. i plan on tearing it back apart tomorrow to see if that is that is whats wrong.

I never take shortcuts when it comes to brakes,I would tear both sides down.Replace the wheel cyl. and hoses and inspect to see what else needed to be repaced.My truck would pull to the right real bad everytime I even touched the brakes.I rebuilt both sides and now I can slam the brakes and let go of the wheel and it will stop strait asd an arrow.

wheel cylinder=replaced and bled, and still same results. have the DR side WC too, gonna replace that tomorrow, if we arent rolling in the snow all day. any other suggestions?

the flex lines were recently replaced with metal braided line. and the front lines from the proportioning valve also look newer.

okay, so both WC's = replaced. still same problem. bled the brakes and all that jazz too. some pedals, ill have full pedals, and other pedals i need to pump it before theres any pressure. it was the same before, and i could have sworn that this would fix it. whats next, proportioning valve?

Double check your wc, if you put in a rebuilt part doesn't mean it's good. I've had one caliper last a year and then 4 more until I got one that was good. If they are good, it sounds like the MC.

the master wont make one side lock and not the other.
adjust the shoes to where they are dragging ever so slightly and test drive.

thats where they were when i put it back together. just barely dragging.

they were all new parts used, and i double, and triple checked them before assembly.

Change the brake shoes, and clean the drum prior to reassembly..

im not sure i follow when you say "they will still grab". the shoes weren't wet, when i took it apart and they seemed to be reusable. and why would wet shoes cause only that side to have stopping power?
