short/long water pump
What is the difference between a short and long water pump? Visual and performance differences. Which are more common?

For a small block. There are a lot more long pumps out there than short. The change to a long pump can be a nightmare. All new accessories brackets and pulleys, along with a 73-80 power steering pump. The long pump will flow a little better, but it's easier to either shim the pump impeller to close the gap between the impeller and the block, or put in a high flow pump and thermostat.

small note...not that you'll stumble upon one in the junk yard or anything...the corevettes used the short pump quite a bit loner than the trucks did....maybe untill 82?

For long pumps the dimensions change to 5-3/4 and 7-1/4
