SM465 with a stroker?
Does anyone have an SM465 hooked up to a motor that scoots pretty good, like a stroker? I'd really like to keep the SM465, but would like to put a potent crate motor (for me, that's around 340-350 hp) in the truck. Let me know what you guys have in front of your old 4-speeds.

Re: SM465 with a stroker?
If you are asking if it will handle power- this truck is putting 760 HP thru one. Very common at this power level and they hold up pretty good.

Re: SM465 with a stroker?
Ive been running a 465 behind a 400hp 400 10 years, started popping out of 3rd gear recently, but the trans was worn and was in a 66 chevy running 75 k20 gear. as long as its not worn out, its fine

Re: SM465 with a stroker?
I have a pretty stout 454 with either an SM420 or 465 behind it and I hate it! I don't do much towing, and the gearing just FEELS wrong to me. I like off the line speed, but when I am in fourth before I hit 40 miles an hour, not my cup of tea. I have a TH400 ready to install this weekend. While I know the TH400 may not have the same strength (or it might), but I prefer the off line speed.
From a strength perspective, these manual transmissions are capable of handling a LOT of power. |

Re: SM465 with a stroker?
I'm thinking that the gearing is much like a three-speed in that you use a wide range of rpm's for each gear, from almost lugging the motor to almost over-revving it. I wonder if a 383 stroker would be an O.K. motor for that?
