driveshaft crap - the stupid stuff we do - yolk info
okay - just FYI - all of the following trannies use the same yolk:
Muncie/Saginaw 3spd T56 T-10 TH350 4l60E Muncie M21 Probably are other ones, but that's a list just for reference. I found this out the hard way. So... my engine and tranny shipped shipped with a cap in the end of the tranny tailshaft it to keep the fluid from running out. I thought it was just a red plastic cap - but there was a tube the same diameter as the yolk which was inserted in the tailshaft to hold that cap in ... i didn't know this, so it stayed in ... Uh, I kept trying to stick a yolk in the end of the transmission and it wouldn't fit because of that tube - I tried every sticking in every yolk imaginable to man before I realized (while talking to the guys in chat), "Duh, there is an extra tube in here preventing the yolk from going in!"...then I notice after pulling that little tube out that, "DAMNIT my 3spd yolk woulda fit!" So, I find out this info too late, after going to Summit to buy the "right" part and realizing it wouldn't fit (hence why I realized there was an additional piece to the tranny cap in the tailshaft). Well, to add to it, before I figured out this juicy tidbit of info, I decided that while I had my driveshaft out I might as well pop out the U-joints (thinking I was going to need a new yolk) and I was going to need to shorten the driveshaft to fit. So, newer u-joints, less than 10k miles on them, DS in good shape, all with a yolk I thought was wrong. Well, once I realized I had the right yolk already, I (was pissed and) popped my 3spd yolk into the T56 tranny all the way, slid it out an inch, then measured from mid-u-joint cap to mid-u-joint cap and realized my stock driveshaft and yolk for the 3spd was already within ½" length of the DS i needed - in other words, I DIDN'T NEED TO REMOVE THE U-JOINTS, I DIDN'T NEED TO REMOVE THE YOLK, AND THE 3SPD DRIVESHAFT WAS THE PERFECT LENGTH TO USE WITH MY LS1 AND T56. My driveshaft needs to be ~56½" and it is currently 56". So, now I get to pay someone $60 to press in two new the U-joints that I didn't need to take out in the first place. This is like the third time I've done something in this swap to cost time and money when, had I figured out what was really going on and not made a "newbie" mistake, I could have saved money, time and hassle. Meanwhile, I just drove to a driveshaft shop in Marietta GA only to get screwed around by the guys that worked there and drive all the way back to work getting nothing accomplished after waiting an hour. I swear, sometimes life just isn't fair

When I swapped to my 700R4 (27 spline) my 3spd manual splined shaft didn't fit. I think it was either 28 or 30 splines? I think my tranny was a saginaw? It sucked searching yard's for one that had the correct splines and fit my driveshaft!

Re: driveshaft crap - the stupid stuff we do - yolk info
I had a 3spd saginaw synchronized (out of a '69). had 27 or 28 splines.
meathead, i probably could press it in - but i damaged at least one of them when punching them out, so if the shop is installing them for free after i buy em, i might as well let em do it.

Re: driveshaft crap - the stupid stuff we do - yolk info
Doesnt the 200-4r use the same yolk too? Plus the 200-4r is almost the same length as the saginaw 3sp

Hate to hear that you are having so much trouble with your truck project. Seems to have you frustrated a bit. I get that way too sometimes when I turn on my new computer, that's hooked to my new copier/scanner/printer, that I down loaded pictures from my new digital camera into....... AND I STILL CAN'T POST A DAMN PICTURE ON THIS SITE. Now I feel much better.

Re: driveshaft crap - the stupid stuff we do - yolk info
It's possible. You need to know whether your yoke is a 27/28 spline or 32 spline. The Super T-10 came in a 28 spline and a 32 spline.
These transmissions use 27 or 28 spline: GM TH-350/Powerglide/Super T-10/4L60E/4L60/T-56/Muncie M-21 These use 32 spline: GM TH-400/ Doug Nash/ Borg Warner Super T-10 Transmission
