Steering column

I'm having a issue with the turn signal switch and the ignition switch so I've been looking at columns. The one I have is not a tilt so I was looking to upgrade. Browsing summits webpage I noticed that new columns are not as bad as I thought and really, with a used one it will have issues in the future. It asks for the length of the column. Anyone know? My truck is a 82 with the 700r and non tilt. And with a aftermarket column i'm sure their is other things I would have to buy to adapt it. Anyone do this before and can shed some light or am I better off buying a used on and having it rebuilt?

Re: Steering column

You could go either way on rebuilding, used or a new column. Rebuilding the switches is not that hard of a task. You can get the tools to remove the column cheap or rent them from your local parts store. Search you tube for videos on how to rebuild them. There are some good ones on there. There are some universal columns out there. I did a search and saw a few on the 60-66 forum. I am thinking of getting one myself.

Re: Steering column

Personally I'd first go thru Craigslist and get a used one with tilt. Then I'd try the local junkyards. There are a few modules on the outside of the steering column that you may want to replace ($10-20) which is for the ignition which may help.

But I'm thinking about replacing my column in the future with a floor shift and/or chrome one. I've always seen them advertised in lengths. Which length is ours?
