Duramax in 67 K10

Wondered if anyone had much input on the subject. How hard would this be to do.
I will soon do the body work on the truck in my Street Rod class.
After it's done...

Back home I have a 84 1ton -- dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear that I plan to clean up and put under it. Plan on running 4.88's + currently 4.10's I think.

Have a friend with a 12in lift off his 71 he wants to sell. How close is that to fitting 44's?
Found a 2001 Duramax with just over 100,000mi.
Plan to get a matching 6spd.

Does someone make an adapter for a NP205 to a newer tranny?
Will a Duramax fit without having to fab up everything?

Had a stock 454 ready to rebuild but sold it, looking for decent mileage and don't want to stress out a small block.

Any sites with detailed info?

Yeah,all fabbing required.I dig your idea.It wouldn`t be easy.It`s alot just to put one in a`98 that already was diesel.It won`t bolt-up.Don`t believe there`s an adapter made for any of it.I`d plan on using engine/trans/t-case.You`ll need the harness and computer.Ever go on www.thedieselpage.com?It`s the GM diesel site.They put the D-max in a`95ish shortbed 2wd.You can bolt a 6.2 or 6.5 right in.I have a 6.5TD that makes 300+hp.To make 450hp,there`s a twin-turbo set-up for another $3grand.

you better get the Allison for behind that Dmax. or maybe someone can reprogram your PCM to run without the trans.
plan on LOTS of fabrication. exhaust will be pretty tough also due to the heater box location.
I do congrtulate you on your dare to be different, but.....
unless you plan on pulling about 20,000 lbs that Dmax would be gross overkill.

If the donor truck doesn't have the ZF 6 speed already, good luck finding one for it. Just keep the stock transfer case, it has a higher rated torque input than the 205 anyway, without expensive adapters.

I was wondering why you don't use some other engine without the computer stuff?

I don't see that much in Dura-well I won't finish. They work good, but certainly not the puller I thought they'd be...........Atleast the one I was in.

ive seen one truck with 12" clear 44's not sure if he had any issues with rubbing...but a body lift might be needed on top of that

The duramax I found has all the computers and I have the option of the allison. Don't really want an auto. Might tell the guy to look for one with the ZF6, didn't know they were somewhat rare. Motor mounts and cross members can be made with help from a friend. If it causes much of a problem I won't put the heater box back on.

Rather than buy a new truck for $40,000 I think I could do this for less than half. Throw on a few parts from banks or bully dog and I think it would be bad azz. Overkill maybe, do live on a horse farm and would like to know it can pull but we have other things for that. Goal is a driver that can do well at local shows.

If I can get into chassis fab this wouldn't be much of a problem but unless someone decides not to go they're full until 06.

Best part is, you only have to pay for steel in street rod. Figure I can clean up the entire body for a few hundred bucks and prime it for paint.

I wanted an early 5.9 into it, but the weight and length was a big issue with that engine. The 4BT was to dinky IMO to put into a 3/4 ton, I wanted to pop the hood and "WOW" everyone. I found a 6AT3.4 6 cylinder. Designed by Onan and built by Cummins, it was a direct replacement for a 292 GM 6 from what I am told. Tipping in at 850 Lbs and just under the max length that would fit in the engine compartment it will work. I actually got it mounted now, had to make new motor mounts, but the GM clutch/bell housing adapter plate made it easy to reference while mounting. Currently working on my trans setup. I hope I have it running soon, been saying that for the past two weeks though

I could have went with a GM V-8 Diesel or heaven forbide a 6.9 or 7.3 IH(Pre-Powerstroke)..........I actually wanted a Jimmy(4-71 or something) but I could see real issues getting it to fit

I wanted to power mine with a 5.9 l cummins but couldn't get my hands on a decent chassis, a week or so after I bought a '92 Chevrolet 3500 5.7 l 5 speed my dad's friend sold his to my dad, so now at least I get to drive one and not a cent invested, except for some diesel fuel. My truck with it's 350 will pull most anything and for the big trailers I will just use dad's truck.

Better watch those old wives tales yourself. What gas engines are the 6.9 and 7.3 based on? International never made a 444 cubic inch gas engine.

Yeah,I don't know any diesels that were gas blocks.Even the mid 70s olds 350 diesels had a different block and heads than a gas 350.The blocks were extra thick.Could be way over bored to build big cube small block.

only the 5.7l gm diesel was based off a gasoline block,but as chebycheyenne said the 6.2/6.5 was not the best motors in the world. i got 200,000 mi. on a 6.2 with a banks turbo installed but i've seen alot of them blow up with alot less miles.

Can a shade-tree mechanic work on diesels pretty much the same way as gas engines? I would imagine so, I just never hear of anyone working on the internals of it.

The 5.7l GM diesel was built by oldsmobile,and used in other gm vehicles.The diesel block is not the same casting as the olds 350,or any other gm block.If You had a bare diesel block and a bare gas block next to each other You would see how much thicker the diesel was.
As far as maintance,Yes you can do most of the work.

I don`t know the exact IH gas motor that Navistar 6.9/7.3 NAs are built from.But it is a little known fact.I can research it,if you really want me to.Also,200,000 miles ain`t no crap.I`ve got 250,000 and counting on a 6.5TD w/original inj.pump,injectors,glow-plugs...everything.I had 275,000 on my`84 K/30 when I sold it to a friend that ran it around and used it to haul hay wagons,haul firewood,and any other chores required of a mountain farm truck(120" of snow avg.per year)until the body rotted off and he sold it to another guy that planned to put a better body on it.One time his wife filled it with gas and ran it back to the farm.They drained it and filled it with diesel,that was in`92.I guess you can call that a "wives-tale",just not "old".

I will stand on the pro-6.5/6.2 side of the fence. as mentioned earlier they can & do last a long time. easy to work on comparably. the only problems I have seen mechanically is the nylon spacers between the rocker arm going bad & broken valve springs. both are easy to fix in an afternoon in your own driveway.
in short I believe you will be happiest with one of these instead of a Dmax. (the Dmax is best when part of a complete system)

A little diesel trivia.There`s a book called "A Corporate Tragedy" about IH Trucks.It tells of a new line of gas motors ready for production when IH dropped the L/Ts.After selling the L/T diesel concept to Ford,they quickly converted these to diesel.The gas motors were the MV-404 and MV-446.
