AC Belt Squeaks But It Is TIGHT?

Hey guys, quick question, when I switch my a/c on in my 71 pick up with a 402 engine, it squeaks like crazy but if I play with the gas a little it will go away until I stop and try and take off and it will start shrieking again. I checked the belt and it seems plenty tight. I do notice that it is a narrow type belt (I replaced it) and seems to fit way down into the pulley. Do you think a wider belt would be the way to go so it would catch the sides of the pulley better, or whatever your thoughts are I'd appreciate because its HOT down here.

I had a 72 that was like that. I checked out the r-12 charge to make sure the pressures were correct. They were. I then put on a new belt, because they get hard & glaze over. It still squealed some. I looked at the compressor pulley and it was SO shiny & smooth, so I sanded the v surface with about 320 grit to break the surface glaze, and that solved it. The belt had to be real tight too.

If the belt sets too far in the pulley and rides in the bottom of the "V" it will slip no matter how tight you get it. I'd get a wider belt so it rides on the sides of the "V" and sand to break the glaze as MT1972 suggested.

Use some belt dressing . The cheapest thing is to get a bar of soap and while running push it against the belt (inside of belt). BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can get hurt. Also its not a good idea to run your belt as tight as you can get it. It could ruin you ac,alt, water pump,or power steering pump pulleys. It will put a great load on the bearings.

Just tried the soap trick and it worked. Now the question is, how long will it last, .

Long enough for you to buy a can of belt dressing

Should last a couple days.

FIXED IT!! I got a wider belt and also sanded the inside of the pulley grooves. Not one squeak, perfect. Thanks for the help.
