ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

Well as the title says I am just one of those people that think the quadrajunk is too overly complicated and is just not suited for my particular vehicle. First let me tell you whats on my 70' burb right now. It is a qjet off of an 83' C10. I have looked it over again and again and I just don't have the patience for it. I have finally put my foot down and I am switching to a holley carb. Right now I'm eye balling a 670 street avenger elec. choke but the engine in my burb' is a pretty tame 350 with a 700-R4 overdrive. Would a 570 be better for my burb'. I would also like to get the best fuel economy out of this truck while cruising and part throttle driving. and one more thing to consider is that I have to drive up and down a hill to get from town to my house which is an elevation change of 2,500 ft so tuneability is a big factor here. Basically what it boils down to is 1 Fuel economy 2 low end torque 3 tuneablilty 4 less headaches (actually that should be first)

edelbrock is the best choice for your application. Fuel milage and a holley is not likely. a 600 is ok for a mild 350 unless you drive the crap out of it.

Holley makes a nice carb, but if you want clean, simple and affordable than Edelbrock is the way to go IMO. There really isn't much to them, easy to work on, tune and fix. Although I haven't had a Holley on anything since my 67 Camaro and that was back in 96.

Its all preference.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

80 something Q-jet on a 70 something motor, hmmm yea issues there already.
Q-jet more complicated than a Holley? Debatable.

I agree with all the others, and go with the Edelbrock carb.

I ran one for years, and yea it is pretty much a bolt in, hook up, and forget carb for a driver. You won't be disappointed with that set up, which is more than I would say for Holley as a DD carb.

Yet another vote for the Edelbrock. Try a #1406, the tuning kit is nice to have too.

Be perpared to use more fuel, nothing beats a q-jet for fuel econ. i would find a 70's q-jet for your engine.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

i bypassed all the flashy holley JUNK and went straight with a reman'd q-jet for my 72 burb induction upgrade (stock 2bbl). the q-jet handled all those GM muscle cars back in the day and it flows more than an entry level holley or edelbrock carb for less money (why pay more for less?) i do have an edelbrock intake under my carb (idle-5500rpm range) for even better throttle response and torque. "holley" and "ideal" do not belong in the same sentence, but edelbrock does make an decent q-jet knockoff. spread bores forever!

Sadly, Edelbrock stopped making them a few years ago.

I actually picked a couple of mpg when I went to an Edelbrock, though I tuned it and didn't really touch the Quadrajet it replaced.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

I have a Q-jet on my 454 in a '71 C-10 and am ready to switch to something else.

My brother swears by Holley and my son says Edelbrock is the only way to go.

From what I have heard on this forum people like Edelbrock better, now all I have to do is figure out which model to go with. The 454 is pretty much stock with an RV cam and headers.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

Instead of paying for a holley that would also require alot of tuning, SMI (sean murphy induction) will rebuild your q-jet to your engine specs for 180$ and fix all the common q-jet problems

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

wow, I really appreciate everybody's input. I definately wasn't expecting to hear so many people in favor of the edelbrock carbs. I will definately have to look over my options with edelbrock. One of the big things I'm worried about is the fact that I have to drive up and down a hill that has an elevation change of 2,500ft any pointer as to how I can get the best out of a carb when I'm changing elevation so frequently.

Lastly which edelbrock carb would you recommend. I'm not going to drive the wheels off the burb' It will rarely see 5,000 rpm and I just want a reliable, dependable, smallish carb.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

I would recommend an Edelbrock 1406 as well, seeing as you have quite an altitude change in your commute. They're fairly simple to setup and once you've done that, it can pretty much be forgotten about.

The holley would be a lot more finicky... you'd have to baby it by constantly tuning it to get what you want out of it. Holley's are good for the drag-strip though.

Of course as a few have said here as well, a properly tuned q-jet surpasses the advantages of both edelbrock and holley... and has none of the disadvantages.

I'm gonna be the lone Holley guy. The Street Avenger is a great carb. I would much much rather have it than an Edelbrock. I have a ZZ430/700r4/3.73/26" tire in my 79 Elco with a 770cfm Street Avenger that gets 16-18mpg. Just my 2 cents.

Edlebrocks are very easy to work on, I know, just rebuilt my old one yesterday. Its was too easy, making me think I was missing something.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

I know I am too late but I just have to stick up for Holley. I have a 600 vac secondary on my 350 and I just bolted it on and have driven it daily for over a year with zero problems. Starts first time every time and reading the plugs the mixture is spot on. Switched from a Q-jet to a Edelbrock that constantly boiled the fuel in the bowls and flooded the engine before the Holley. I have a 200r4 and 3.73's and I feel the mileage isn't bad. Just had to put in my 2 cents.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

The edelbrock 1406 is looking pretty good from all the carbs I've been looking at. For anybody who has used one, would I be able to get the carb to hook up with the TV cable for my 700-R4. I just don't want to put good money down just to find out I have to take a couple more trips to the parts store.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

I HATE Edelburp carbs. I would rather have a leaky Q-jet than one. After 4 bad Edelbrocks, I now have the Holley 570 SA and LOVE it. I get decent mileage and runs ALOT better than any Edelbrock I've ever had.

I say go with the 570 Holley.

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

If you chose the Holley or Edalbrock you will need on of these.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts.aspx?sku=EDL-2732
And you will need one of these for the Edelbrock.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-64511/
And one of these for the Holley
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HUP-HP8625/
Just some more reasons to stay with the Q-Jet

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

I have to vote Edelbrock. I put one on my 292 and right out of the box it was good to go. All I had to do was set the idle RPM.
As for the Holley, they don't tolerate "sneezes" very well, the power valves suffer from them. They have to be taken off the engine to be tuned, (An Edelbrock's rods and jets can be changed on the engine with no gas leakage)and Holley having gaskets below the fuel level sorta bothers me. JMO

Re: ready to ditch my Qjet, Which Holley is ideal?

Well I ordered the 1406 edelbrock this morning with the spreadbore to square bore adapter plate. I asked the representative on the phone about any special parts for the 700-R4 and he said that I didn't need anything. but after looking at those links it looks like he was wrong.

when it comes to the 700-R4 if I left the TV cable disconnected at the carb would that mess up the transmission. I know that if it's improperly adjusted that it can do some serious damage really quick.
