Alterate Tach Location?
Greetings Truckers,
Would like to find an different location to mount the tach. Currently mounted to the steering column. I like it until I drive at night and get the reflection on the windshield. Was thinking of mounting to the top of the dash. Any thoughts? Thanks, MrBlue

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
I HATE the tach glare in the glass.... it's right in your direct line of sight too. I've been told I was crazy for complaining about that... even been told I was seeing things.
I installed mine in the dash to prevent this, in the center hole where the factory one would have gone. |

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
I vote center hole of cluster also. I actually disassembled my SunPro tach and mounted it from behind the original cluster lens for a more factory look. Turned out pretty good.
You can see it if you check thru my old threads.

What about on the windshield pillar? Does anyone have it mounted there and how is the visibility?

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
Mine was mounted on the column when I bought my truck, but I moved down to the knee knocker position now..lol,,,although it is still attached at the column.
I can't see it really well without looking though, but I dont need a darn tach in a cruiser anyways lol |

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
Oh, ok. Thank you! My first thought was maybe a GM, but I thought the numbers looked closer together.

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
I would have to agree with the tach in the dash for the best place. My next choice would be on the right windshield pillar. Next would be on top of dash at a angle to the driver.
19seventeeCustom, I would never mount mine that low myself. My reasoning is simple. If your ever in a bad wreck heaven forbid and you go into the dash that thing is going to cut your leg off. Just my thoughts on having anything mounted low in the drivers side of any vehicle.

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
I have a sport comp tach mounted on top of the dash. Never had any problems of glare.

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
Bad70, do you have any pictures of how the tach is mounted to the top of the dash?
Anyone, is a pillar mounting panel made specifically for our trucks? |

Re: Alterate Tach Location?
When GM mounted those tachs in Malibus like that pic had, all we thought at the time was, "it's got a tach". Mfr's didn't have tachs as standard equipment. If you had a Grand Prix (Pontiac), a Star Fire (Olds) or a Wildcat (Buick), it would be mounted on the console....if it had a stick. If it was an automatic, you got a vacuum guage. Regardless, until Pontiac put the tach in a pod on the hood....in front of the driver....finding the tach was difficult if you were serious about using one. In those cases, they got mounted where you could see them, and where you could show it off....on top of the dash and offset just a touch.
