Project started Saturday - What year is this truck???
Hello everyone. A while back I asked about body swap info but didn't get a whole lot of response to what I was looking for. So I just dove in and hoped it would work!
I took an 86 long box K10 frame and chopped 27" out of the center to eliminate the kickup. It's about the wheelbase of a K5 blazer now. I built custom front leaf packs to hold the load of my plow and put in 3/4 ton axles. 10 bolt front, 14 bolt rear. The engine is an 86 350 with a .443" lift 212° duration cam, new lifters, pushrods and rockers, edelbrock intake and carb, hooker headers and I've got some flowmasters to put on too. I originally planned on a TH400/208 combo but it's way too long for a decent rear driveshaft angle. I'll pull that out and swap in an SM465/205 combo soon. I tossed the body on yesterday, but I'm not sure what year it is. Could anyone help identify the year by the pictures? I ordered an LMC truck catalog for the little bits and pieces that my body will need to be near complete. I'll most likely fab some rockers, cab corners and floor pans to make sure this will be stout to drive with one of my daughters in it with me. Here's a link to some pictures of the build so far... http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...Rig%20Buildup/ Thanks guys |

Looks like 68 - 69 GMC front clip, probably the same as the cab. The Chevy hood will not work with that GMC grill and front end from what I have heard. May wanna check into that.

Re: Project started Saturday - What year is this truck???
Thanks for the tips slick.
He has another cab that's been stripped of everything, possibly one is a chevy and the other's a GMC. I'm not looking to make this a pretty truck, just funtional. If need be, I'll make a way that it will fit. Maybe even custom hinges or custom latch mechanism. I'm not too picky! I hope to use most the electronics from my 89 K5 so I'll eventually be able to run TBI. The TBI engine needs some head work or head gaskets, it's blowing coolant out the radiator. Thanks again! |

The hood is shorter in the front on a GMC due to the trim taking the place of the leading edge of the hood as opposed to a Chevy hood. Not sure what years that this is the case, or if it is all years. Maybe he has the right parts for you just waiting!!! Post up the pics in a build thread, surely there are others wanting answers to questions that you may encounter. Good luck!!

Re: Project started Saturday - What year is this truck???
Oh, ok. Thank you for the info. Hope to get the tranny pulled tonight and get the 4 speed down to the shop floor (my gravel driveway!) so I can get ready to drop that in. I might need to fab up one of those cab lifting arms for my cherry picker, that's a great idea! I wrestled my cab onto the lifted frame by myself and beat up the rockers and cab corners pretty good. They need to be replaced anyways though.

Re: Project started Saturday - What year is this truck???
No offense to Slick67, but some info above is wrong. There is no difference between hoods on GMC to Chevy, other than the lettering or emblem and that the GMC has a trim piece that is part of the grill. The only hood difference is 67-68 to the 69-72 style, which do not interchange. There are some differences in the cabs that might help identify the year built. If the gas pedal is the cable style, rather than a rod style it is 71-72, if the rear view mirror mounts to the steel above the windshield it is a 69-71, mounts on the windshield glass it is a 72.
So if it is a rod style throttle, it is 69-70. I really don't think there are any ways to tell the difference between a 69 and 70 cab. The mirror mount is how you tell between a 71 and 72. Good luck with the build. I'm doing my own junkyard build.

Re: Project started Saturday - What year is this truck???
well I appreciate any info on these body styles, because I'm the first to admit that I don't know Jack about them! The mirror does mount to the roof and not the glass, I'll have to check on the throttle linkages. i think it's a cable.
Thanks! |

Re: Project started Saturday - What year is this truck???
So I just realize this build section is mainly 2wd trucks and there's a seperate 4x section. I'm going to post everything I've done in this thread in that build area, it seems like it fits a bit better overr there. I'll definately be keeping up on the builds, I'm learning so much about the common rust spots and the many body mods to do to these awesome trucks! Thanks for the help!
