Just killed #5 yesterday, gotta stop buying those parts store starters.

Put a starter on right after I bought the truck, over 3 years ago. Over 44,000 city miles since then.

Same starter for the past 18 years. I admit I don't drive the truck all that much and it is a 6 cylinder so maybe that helps. It always starts.

I'm on the second one in 3 years. Headers are the killer. Someone mentioned a remote solenoid a while back. Has anyone tried this? A heat sheild would be good too.

Lets see, I have replaced mine once. That would be one in 5 years and always with full length headers.

When i bought my truck about 3 years ago, it had a autozone starter on it. It went out, and i found a recepit in the glovebox and got it replaced for free. Then it went out again, and i bought an O'Reilly's starter. Then, one day while tightening it down after removing it, the allumium nosecone broke on it. I got it replaced under warranty. So, i've had 3 starter failures in 3 years. This one seems to be doing OK though. I ALWAYS get lifetime warranty parts when i buy "remanufactured" stuff from the parts store, because it usually goes out, and they are usually good about honoring the warranty

Dion, do you have headers? Remote solenoid helped my starter out, was having heat sink problem from headers, didn't have to replace the starter, but when I do, it will be with the newer style mini-starter. From past info on the board, it seems as though everyone that has changed over to the mini-starter is pretty happy with the outcome.

I'm on the same starter for the last 7 years. I'm surprised it lasted in this heat but it did.

on my old 70 buick gs i was going through starters every 2-3 months. went through 5 of the kragen starters (thank goodness for the free replacements). found out it was the faulty ignition switch that was killing them (one of those you can pull the keys out while driving or start it with any key type of deals lol) i replaced the ignition switch, never had starter problems again

I can't recall replacing mine since I've had it. Maybe my did before me. I've been driving it for 5 or 6 years now. I have long tube headers and a manual trans. I've only had starter problems in the past when I was running an automatic tranny. Go figure

in my experience burning up starters can sometimes be caused by a faulty ground stap, i burned up a mini starter like that.

4 in a year, then I got a heat shield and haven't replaced one in 4 years. Headers are a PITA sometimes.
