Front Fender

I have a 1984 GMC 1500 that I am starting to fix up. I wish I had all the money in the world to fix her up all at once. Like many others its going to be a piece at a time.... Anyway I not what many would consider a " skilled mechanic". I guess you can call me a noob. The first thing I am doing is removing the front fenders. Anyone have any tips or things I should know? Thanks in advance.

Re: Front Fender

Yes - obviously (I hope) the hood has to come off first.

There are a number of small bolts holding the front of the fender on. Two at the top, forward of the rad support, and then five or so down the back of the rad support.

The rest of them should be obvious: one horizontal bolt at the bottom rear, one horizontal bolt inside the door, and one vertical bolt in the vicinity of the hood hinge.

There may be shims (or packs of shims taped together) at those rear locations. Make note of how many came out of each location, and then don't be surprised if it needs to be different when you go back together.

Let us know when you are ready to reassemble and I'll walk you through that process.

Re: Front Fender

if the paint is good on your truck take some masking tape and mask off the front edge of the door it protects if the fender and door make contact.. blue painters tape works as well as green if you don't have normal masking tape
