H2 wheels with GMC center caps?

Since the 8-lug wheel choice is somewhat limited, of the options available I think I prefer the chrome H2 wheels that I've seen. Those who have used them apparently use a centercap with the Bowtie on them, but I have a GMC (1970 2500 3/4-ton).

So, two questions:

1) Is that centercap I see actually the Hummer one or is it from a Silverado?
2) Is there a good GMC centercap that I can get from a later application that will work?

Thanks!
Dave

Re: H2 wheels with GMC center caps?

All 99-current 3/4 ton caps will work with the right lugnuts. The chevy and gmc centers are the same minus the decal in the middle.

Most of this is ture. 2011 the lug pattern changed so dont get those and there is a small difference in the center caps between steel and aluminum wheel. The ones on aluminum wheels have 4 small studs that have to be cut off to fix on the hummer wheels.

Re: H2 wheels with GMC center caps?

I put those wheels on the '03 2500 i just sold. I got the center caps off ebay brand new for under $100. The GMC caps are exactly the same, except for the logo of course. I think the H2 wheels look great with those caps, and would love to see them on a 67-72

Since the picture in post #1 is mine, here's what I found...

1) Do NOT expect that all of the caps from the last decade will fit. The ONLY cap that I know will fit into the H2 wheel recess is the one used on the 2500HDs from 2001-2006/2007 Classic Chevys and GMCs WITH THE ALUMINUM WHEEL OPTION. I also THINK this cap was used on the aluminum wheels during the first couple years of the current generation. This cap fits perfectly into the recess, and I did not need to make any modifications other than use SAE dual thread lugnuts. I can say with absolute certainty that the van caps (I think for the steel wheels with the chrome plate or overlay) which have a nearly identical appearance and the steel wheel caps WILL NOT fit the recess. I tried a set of these first. To differentiate these 2 cap styles...The aluminum wheel caps have buldges around the circumference at each lug location and fit, and the van caps are smooth around the circumference. The dually caps are way too big, even the rears.

2) Refer to this thread for my description of fitment and lug nut choices. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=504413 I don't recall the offset, etc. and have not checked clearance other than as noted in this thread. My truck is currently in the state shown in the picture. Note that my truck is a 69 with front drums. I read somewhere on this forum that disc brakes place the wheel mounting surface farther outboard.

Re: H2 wheels with GMC center caps?

As I said before, FirstOwner69, those wheels are killer! First will be my front disc conversion, but in the meantime I will keep my eyes open for a set of those. Chrome definitely look better than aluminum.

Here is what I've learned so far for the H2 wheels:

17" Dia.
8-lug X 6.5" BC
4-1/2" Hub Dia.
8-1/2" width (9-3/4" overall rim width)
5-1/2" Backspace which translates to 3/4" (19 mm) positive offset

I purchased OEM Chevy 16" center caps P/N 9597169 / 9597170 which are 2001-2007. They fit perfectly on the H2 rims with no mods required. I need to buy conversion lug nuts next.

I am not sure about my tires. I want to run a bigger tire, like 285/70-17. I just want to be sure they will fit without any clearance problems.

So glad I finally found this thread again. Where did you end up buying your caps?

I bought the center caps on Ebay. Do a search and you should find them. I can't recall the seller. I also bought the conversion lug nuts on Ebay. I think I used the Lug Nut King for those. Good luck. Keep me posted on how you make out.

For sure. I am excited, just found a set on the local craigslist for $400. Probably get him down to at least $350 for a set in chrome. Also, I just did an eBay search and just wanted to make sure I didnt get screwed with some cheap plated center cap.

There are a lot of non-chrome H2 wheels that have been chrome plated. It's easy to spot them.

Chevy or GMC? What rear end? Below is what I ended up with. 2001-2007 aluminum wheel caps modified so the centers resemble the hubcap centers. The steel wheel caps that look almost identical will not fit the wheel recess. The Dana axle will present fitment problems due to how far the hub projects. I think Davepl ended up using spacers.

Chevy. Eaton. Putting the POL Disc Kit in the front and will consider disc in the back, maybe, in the future.

From what I can tell, this should be straight forward like Dan's, right?

Will they fit over the huge rear FF hub on a '97 Suburban 2500? I have been searching the internet for a few days trying to come up with the best way to go about it. I bought the machine silver H2 wheels because i thought they might match the two tone silver on the truck. This is more work than i imagined finding a suitable cap.

These GMC caps fit. They dont have that "star" pattern in the middle just smooth. You will need the lugs with threads on outside too.
