Hello All,
The truck started really making noise today and I thought the motor was about ready to let go, but, when I opened up the hood, I discovered the clutch fan is shot, and when I try to turn the fan by hand, it is really "crunchy" and feels terrible, How hard are these to replace? How do you get inside the large shroud?
Is it a really tough job?

It usually is not too bad of a job. You will want to remove the fan clutch to water pump fasteners first. To keep the pulley from turning, loosen the fasteners first before removing the fan belt.

Once those fasteners are removed then you can remove the assembly and change out the fan on your work bench.

If the shroud interferes remove the two upper bolts and pick up the shroud slightly to release it from the lower clips.

Are you going with a thermostatically controlled unit or just a clutch fan?

cutting up a box and covering the core of the rad is a pretty good idea too.
And disconnect the battery. Once the alt is loose, it can easily arc out on the engine and melt the harness going across the core support... I'm surprised my hands don't have scars on them from that one.

i just did this yesterday as a matter of fact i just took it off the pully with all the belts on it they helped hold the pully in place and just switch the fan over and re bolt on a total of 8 bolts really simple if i didnt have to go back to the parts store to get the bolts would og been done in 15 minuts
