68 panel runnin'!!

We got my buddy's 68 panel running the other day. It bellowed white smoke when it started and kept on smoking quite a bit for awhile. It had been sitting for 3+ years, so we figured that was normal. It's been running now for two weeks and today after bleeding the brakes and installing a new MC, we took her out for a short drive. It's a 350 [010] and has an M-21 tranny behind it.

It runs pretty smooth but still smokes. Is this something the GM top engine cleaner might clear up or is it a valve seal issue? The smoke is white and although it isn't as much as when we first fired it up it's still there.

We installed a new 1405 manual choke carb, new wires and plugs [R45TS]. Other than that and new exhaust gaskets, it's not been touched.

Pics are here on the SBC site....

Someone else said the same thing, Bill....I always thought the smoke was black when it was the seals, but I am no expert by any means.

We cleaned out the gas tank and ran all new lines and used new gas, so I know it's not that. The oil got changed out right before he bought it as well.

Re: 68 panel runnin'!!

hmm, white smoke is usually coolant getting into the combustion chambers.

What you can do, is put your hand in front of the smoke/exaust, and then smell the residue on your hand.
I know it sounds crazy, but it works, if it's white smoke and smells sweet, it's coolant. if it's white and has little to no smell, then it's usually water in the gas, but you've already addressed that. And if it smells greasy/oily(black smoke) then it's something in your heads(or rings)

That's my

White smoke = WATER
Black smoke = FUEL
Blue smoke = OIL
