Hi I have been looking for a 2004r transmission for the last 2 weeks and have not found one but found a few 7004rs. my question is there is a trans out of a 84 corvet with less of 20k rebuild he says is a 700 he wants 250 ,should I get this one or look for an other?

200 has a better first gear, that is a good price for a 700, if you really want a 200 get it.

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
I assume you want to get a used 2004r, if that’s the case I don't think you'll be happy with a used one. Depending on the power of your truck it may not last. You can get a new/rebuilt 2004r that is built to handle a lot of power, say like 400hp+ for about $1400, I think I saw that one from Bow Tie Transmissions. If you don’t want to spend that much, I say go with the 700r4 or wait till the funds are available for a 2004r.

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
Nice thing about the 200r4 is that it is the same overall length as the th350 (depending on 350 tailshaft, 6" or 9")....can't remember which. You'll have to move tranny mount a little. You might get lucky and not have to dick with your driveshaft....yokes should be the same.

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
The engine is a 292 6 cyl. I'm just looking for crusing @ 70 mph on the freeway. Right now @ 60 mph sounds like the engine is going too fast

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
Cruising at 60, I am going to guess that you are turning almost 2900RPM. (depending on what size tire you have). Making the swap to a 2004r would drop your RPM down to 1950 and with a 700r4 it would be down to 2050, those numbers are for 60mph. If you don't plan on upgrading your engine any time soon, I say keep on looking for a used 2004r.

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
When I bought my 67 it had a 700r4 in it and the drive shaft was cut 3 inches. The truck was originally a six cylinder with a standard shift. I'm not sure what trans came in it. I had the 700r4 front pump rebuilt because it was leaking, and in the process of that the shop told me that the trans would need rebuilding before long. They also told me the torque converter input shaft bearing was in bad shape.
I had access to a rebuilt th350 from the PO of my truck so I decided to use that along with the torque converter for it. He also gave me the drive shaft for the truck but I think that drive shaft is for the original six cyl. standard because it is shorter than the 700r4 shaft, which is shorter than the v-8 TH 350 combo by 3 inches. The point of all this is, the six cylinder drive shaft may have to be lengthened to run the 700r4 or the 2004r if it came with the standard trans and was converted to an automatic. Hopefully someone has the drive shaft dimensions for a v-8 with the th 350 with the engine in the forward location. I am posting this to let the sixers know what they might have to do if they want to run a six/350/700r or 200r4 combination. Also I would like to know what length drive shaft I am going to need for my v-8 th350 combo in the fwd position. It should be a stock length and I wonder if any of the 80/90 years will fit. I read someplace that the corvette ODs were not desirable for some reason for our trucks and if I can find it I'll post the link.

250 6 cyl-three speed standard shift changed to 2004-r, no change or mods to drive shaft. Best mod you'll ever make.

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
3 speed manual, "short" TH350, and 200-4R are all the same length (about 27" overall - include the bellhousing on the manual). The 700-R4 is about 3"
longer. Ray

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
if i had a truck with a th350, i'd find me a 200-4r because it a nearly 100% bolt in upgrade. the 700-r4 has a more aggressive first gear and the 200 has a slightly better overdrive ratio. they both have their supposed durability issues (when compared to the 3 speed autos) but they are plenty stout for everyday use and there are some aftermarket upgrades/builders that will make them plenty beefy for just about any street application. also consider such things as running a lockup converter and using synthetic fluid to reduce heat related wear.
in these modern times of environmental awareness and steep gas prices, having an overdrive for long distance / high speed driving is the logical choice, especially when GM makes upgrading easy. heck, on my 72 burb c20 i swapped the rear axle from a 4.57 to 4.10 third member and have a 66-69 borg warner overdrive equipped saginaw trans so i can keep three on the tree. |

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
i like to use synthetic fluids. automatic transmissions make a LOT of heat (especially when towing) and that wears them out that much faster, so get a good quality atf fluid and don't neglect maintenance and you should be ok.

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
2004rs are a multibolt bell housing so they were the base auto trans in most 80s GMs. They are in every rear wheel drive 80s Cadillac, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, Regal, and all Full size GMs and Wagons. Ive never had a problem finding one ever!

Re: 2004r tranny or 7004r ?
Ok tranny is in. I let my cousin fill the tranny but he did not pay attention how many quarts he put in(I should have donnit my self) I fill the torque till it didn't leak when up. Now the level is about 1 1/2 inch past the full, I know is gonna take some fluid to fill up the torque con. I'm wondering if we put too much fluid. I haven't start the truck til I herd from what you guys think. Thanks again
