I ran into the same problem as you are experiencing. I bet that you have a '67. They are not the same as you see in any catalog. They will not work, period. New ones are not available, at least I checked everywhere and could not find them. I finally found one in a junkyard. Even at that it was really hard to get a hold of. It might be different in other parts of the country but here they are rare. What you are looking for is just an ashtray with no track, no bearings, nothing. It just slides into that hole in your dash, metal to metal.

Two styles
Yes, there are two different ashtrays (early & late). The early ones glide on steel ball bearings, bind up a lot, and don't open as far. The later ones from about 70 ? on slide on plastic or nylon grooved rails. Much smoother and come out farther.
They both bolt in to the dash in the same holes, but you have to get the matching mount to go with the ashtray---not rare at all. Just to confuse you, a few mounts seemed to be welded in, so just skip them...they are not worth the hassle. If you buy a new GM ashtray assembly, you get the mount & ashtray...and you will basically get screwed, since GM just doubled the price to about $40. Used ones clean up real nice. |

Well, Pickmup
It seems that I don't know what I am talking about after reading your post. HMM? If you don't believe me do you want a picture? My 67 has no bearings at all, like I said it is metal to metal. The housing that it goes into is welded in at the factory- there are no holes that anything will mount to. And I have talked to parts suppliers with much more experience than you or I that said that 67 was the only year for this style of ashtray.

oldtrucknut: I have the same type of ashtray that you described in my '67...... no ball bearings..... just a metal "sleeve" that it slides into.

Thanks for backing me up there Slammed67.
Unlike some people here, I only post something when I know exactly what I am talking about.

I would bet good money that those plastic tracks come out. Keep looking for bolts in there. When you get that track out, you can install the whole new ash tray and track.

I also agree about the 67 ashtray. They also were flat (at least mine was) against the dash, instead of raised and rounded like my 68.

Hmmm? Well I am out of ideas on that one. Bring it over to my shop in Indiana and I'll figure it out.

Not perfect--just trying!
Lotik- obviously the one in the pic is the later style I was trying to help describe to you. There is also the ball type and the 67 must be one-of-a-kind.
Oldtrucknut-I don't know who, "Put a nickle in you" and got you going, but I was just trying to help Lotik with a couple different kinds of trays in our trucks. Thanks for the slam. It is really nice that you don't post unless you know exactly what you are talking about...be real careful now...You might make a mistake, unless you do truely know everything. I know I sure don't. Sorry, guys, I was just trying to share some info, not correct anyone. I described two of them, but didn't get the third. It must be nice to be perfect! |

If the dash is from a 72, you need a 72 ashtray, not a 67. Are those rails that have been primed over in the pics plastic? If so it's the later style used 71/72. It sounds to me you may have a 67 ashtray and a 72 dash/plastic rails. This won't fit as you found out.
