What is a good 4-speed auto transmission that can used in my 71 GMC C2500. I was researching the 700r4 but it doesn't seem like it is a sturdy transmission for towing with (camper and small boat). Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

If you got the $$$$ a 4L80E is they way to go. They are basically a TH400 that's a 4 speed with overdrive.

The other option which is $$$ is putting a Gear Vendors overdrive setup behind a TH400. Of the two, it's most likely the cheaper route but you're still looking at $2500+.

I'm in the same boat, trying to find a reasonable solution and have yet to find one. I had a 700R4 in my last '68, which worked fine but I never did any hauling/towing with it.

Find a late eighties 700r4 and rebuild it with a Turbo 700 kit. It will handle anything you're going to throw at it. I can't remember who offers that kit but it seems like the way to go. Also TCI has a replacement valve body that makes the 700r4 work like a TH350 for fluid pressure. Then the TV cable is used to adjust shift points only. That setup would also be a good choice.

I have been running a 700R4 from BTO (not the band) for over 5 years now behind a fairly healthy big block. I have not had a single problem with it. I purchased their level 3. Here is a link:

I'm a little hesitant to go with the gear vendor and TH400. I have a good friend of mine that runs that combo and the gear vendor keeps going out. I was looking at the 700R4 level three and that seems like a stout unit. Thanks for the options, I'll do some research.

If you have the $$$ and time- I'm sure Advanced Adapters could fab up some sort of conversion kit to shoehorn in the Allison-1000 6-speed out of a Duramax Silverado. I haven't seen or heard of it being done- yet....so I'm basicallly thinking outloud at this point.
