85-87 Two-Tone Striping

Anyone have any leads on where to pick up the vinyl striping that separates the two-tones on the 85-87(88) trucks?

Like this:

I need it for my Dually.

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

If someone like Classic Industries or brothers doesn't carry it, you might check Phoenix Graphics. They repop a lot of musclecar decals, they might be able to make the stripes happen. The front fender and the dually bedsides are the only stripes that are formed. The rest of the panels can use straight stripes, IIRC.

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

Im sure some aftermarket company makes it. I've checked on some and the ones i've checked are discontinued from GM. Is there any specific color combo you're looking for? They made them in about every color combo you can imagine.

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

As mentioned, you can buy the straight stuff from any 3M supplier. The concern here is the corner pieces. Those are to tight to use straight tape. They must be precut to work.

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

The stripes narrow at the front as well, where they make the 90 degree curve. The dually bedside stripes have a formed hump that goes above the fender. You may be able to heat and stretch a straight stripe to make that, though.

I don't remember a factory green stripe like that one in the picture, but it may have been available. The stripes changed between the years also. I am pretty sure that stripe is correct for 85-87 (88 on the heavy trucks and Blazer/Suburban), but I know 81-82 had different spacing, and 84-84 were different, too.

Oh, well I'm not 100% on the color...I was more concerned with finding the actual stripe.

I must have misunderstood.

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

i started out pinstriping cars with 3m tape when i was 16 at my dads dealership. yes those are factory stripes but i used to take the 3m tape and make those stripes. just get 1" base color then 1/8 and lay those over the top. on the curves you can splice and cut to your shape with an xacto blade and make the taper. you can get a 3m tape chart and come up with alot of cool combos.

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

You may also check at some body shops, and see if they get their striping from somewhere that would have more of a selection than the regular parts stores.

I think the Hills Hot Rod stripes were painted on. But I'm sure you can get them from a body part supplier.

Jason painted them on under the clear so there is no difference in feel, just like a graphic. Those colors were not available from factory!! They are a custom mix and jeep rescue green. I believe he said the factory stripe kits a hard to find, if at all!! He painted some charcoal and red ones on another truck that is red & white. It looks damn near factory!!

Re: 85-87 Two-Tone Striping

If it comes down to it, make a to-scale sketch of the corners (stripe width, corner radius, etc.), along with measuring how much straight length you will need and take it to a vinyl sign shop. They will be able to draw the corner pieces in CAD and cut them, even if you are wanting a two or three stripe setup.

I've done this several times with custom graphics/stripes for our fire trucks. Standard NFPA reflective stripping can be boring, so we had to jazz it up a bit.

Dang, Bob you read my mind. I saw more custom stripes & graphics made at a shop I used to work at before I went to school. Anyone with a vinyl plotter should be able to make them. You may even contact a couple guys on the board. I think BGRAFX may be able to do something, I think he can do vinyl. There may be others too.

That is an option by all means. Your best bet is to lay the stripes before you clear, but if the truck is already painted you could use a pinstriper.
