5-speed for 69 C10?
I've searched and read what I can find about 5-speed swap into C10. Most discussions involve swapping a Camaro 5 speed using the Camaro's bellhousing. My 69 307/3-speed bellhousing has mounts to the frame on the bellhousing - the camaro bellhousing wouldn't have that. Is there a 5 speed that can swap in that would use the existing 69 C10 belhousing and clutch fork etc.?

Not sure about the bell housing mounts. I know Brad just installed a T5 to his I6, he might have some insight. Not sure what housing he used.

Wonder what years S10 5-speed? It doesn't look like the 99 S10 5-speed would work based on this picture of one.

Any S-10 with the TBI 4.3 in it would work. '87 or '88 .. whenever they started using the 4.3 .. to '95, probably. But they all had hydraulic clutches.

i wouldnt think that an s10 trans would be that strong or durable when any real power was applied.

But - he's not using the stock bellhousing. My 69 307/3-speed bellhousing has mounts to the frame on the bellhousing and I'd like find a 5 speed that would mount to it - that way I don't have to put in a rear crossmember. Maybe there isn't anything that will work.

i belive the camaro 5 speed will bolt up to the stock bellhousing.but the shifter may hit the seat. the s-10 5 speed would require modifacations (drill out mounting holes,trim input shaft,ect..) the trick thing to do is install the s-10 tailshaft onto the camaro trans.that way it puts the stick in the center of the floor. there is a good artical on this in stovebolt and the inlinners.com this is a cheap way to go if you drive like grandpa (the camaro trans is only good to 300hp max) if you can afford it, the tremec tko600 will bolt up and is good to 600hp. just my 2 cents

The camaro 5 speed is not that stout. They were only installed behind the 305 and were not even offered with the 350. I would find a 5 speed from a early 90's pickup for durabilitly.

X 3 on the Tremec!!! Ours still "hangs" from the factory rear Xmember under the bell housing. We also didn't trim the floor away as you did. Ours was tight but didn't have to trim. We also used the mid-shift location. It is by far the best investment on the truck. We'll see how it does behind the blower now!
Also, if you use the T-5 from the Camaro don't forget that it is canted to one side. And it does bolt right into the bell housing from the I 6. The shifter will end up right under the bench seat as well. I know because I tried this before the Tremec. I wouldn't go that route.

I just put a T-5 behind my I-6. Hmmmm, interesting letter combination-but I digress. Initially I was going to use a 1989 S-10 T-5 but that was going to be much more work, instead I used a 1985 Camaro trans and it's virtually a bolt on deal. There are some things you need to do and I'll do a writeup within a few days.

1967 was the last year the truck bellhousing had a 4.685in. bellhousing hole.
1968 and up had a larger 5.125in. bellhousing hole. That is why the 67 trucks didn't need the throughout bearing spacer like I did. It really helps to locate the transmission accurately for long clutch and transmission life. Having said this, There are people who put the small retainer into the large bellhousing and it seems to work. Just something to remember if the clutch gets trashed prematurely. I did install the Tremec at first with the low hump cab. There was less than 1/2 in. clearence between the top of the transmission and the floorboard. It is not the best picture, but you see it is really tight. Maybe if I had new cab bushings and floor supports there might have been enough clearance. That is why I went to a high hump cover. Easier to service the transmission in the future if necessary. The New Venture NV3550 (second picture) is not the same transmission as the Tremec 3550,TKO series (third picture) transmission. Different companies. |

I put a NV3500 out of a full size 96 chev truck into my 72 cheyenne with a crate 350. It was a direct bolt up from the trans with it's attached bellhousing to the block. Used a stock auto crossmember. Used it's hydrl clutch setup. The 5 speed was GREAT. No issues for several years. Only thing i didn't like is the throwout bearing would self adjust--. That and the fact that the transmission needed electronic hookup for the speedo--no simple way around that!

HotRodWorks.Com has a spacer that allows the swap. hotrodworks.com or by telephone 208.463.1068 (you can view the part @ http://hotrodworks.com/catalog/index...product_id=119) the website could be easier to navigate. It looks like the spacer is for pre-55 Chevy passenger cars. I contacted them directly for clarification; it's designed to fit these trucks. I haven't attempted the swap, hopefully this summer, if it ever stops raining here in Central Indiana. The transmission is about $200 used and the adapter is $160, a new clutch assembly under $150 (I hope).

I want to upgrade my 71 4X4 to a 5 speed manual. have read the nv3500 is extremely difficult to rebuild and has been known to have some problems.
Most of the post I read are from guys much more tech savy than I am, and nearly all are dealing with lowered 2wd trucks. I on the other hand have raised my 4wd and have the added issue of a transfercase. Anyone working on a 4wd? |

To clear up a few things the early 4 and 2.8 6's had the T-5 the mid year 88 model year[was a half year change] when the 4.3 was first made available in the S-10, and the 4.3 was the only one to get the NV3500. the others had the T-5's. The best way to do this the way I have researched it and plan on doing it for my "project Cheapie"are to use a V-8 T-5 trans from a Camaro and a tail housing from a S-10 to move the shifter into a better location in the cab. I know that is taking two to make one but I scrounged around and ended up with both for only $150 so I think it is still doable and since it will bolt to the bellhousing where the three speed was is the best route to go.

If you don't have too much power and want to use a T5 out of a S10 you might want to make sure the one you get takes a mechanical speedo cable. You can google and find out the year mechanical speedos ended but I think it was 1988.

I mated a mid-'80s Camaro T5 with an S-10 tailshaft before installing it behind the stock 307 in my '68.
Full story here Here's the story of the tailshaft swap necessary to get the shifter in the right place. I would not hesitate to put a T5 behind an early smallblock, especially in our trucks. Just don't drive it like an idiot and you should be good to go; I loved my setup. If you decide to go with a Tremec, check out American Powertrain. They have kits and all the stuff you'll need and are very helpful. Hope this helps! |
