Talking Headlight relay install You Gotta do it.

Just finished installing a relay in the high and low beam lights, on a 69 lwb.

If you have not done this install, you should. This is the second truck I've done.

Cost is about $25.00-$40.00 depending how much wire, relays and split loom
you want to replace. This mod will payoff rightaway.

Bright light,
Matthew

Your factory truck headlight wiring sucks. You have 12 volts running from the battery, to the switch on the dash board, back to the headlights RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATTERY!

The wires are too small, the length is to great, the result is less than 11 volts at your headlights.

And all that missing current has to go somewhere. Where it goes is it turns into heat which wears out your $8.00, pain in the a$$ to change headlight switch!

What you do is turn your headlight switch into a relay controller. Use 8 or 10 gauge wire from the battery through the relay to the headlights. The result is 12+ volts at the headlights. The first night you run with these you'll wonder why you waited so long to make the swap.

You'll also wonder why people are buying those $40 each headlight "upgrades".

I was planning on buying one the headlight upgrade kits and didn't realize I would be frying the headlight switch over the long term!. I will look into that kit from Summitt.

no headleads

See here everyone talking about the headlights. I am handy, but when it comes to wiring, i have to left hands. I think this may be my problem. I put a new high/low switch in as well as a new h/lamp switch. I have dash lights, tail lights, directionals and brake lights but no h/lamps either high/low beam. Any info on what I am facing here would be great. Thanks to all for any input.

I have done it, can't believe anyone with a daily driver that sees night driving wouldn't do it. It makes night time driving 10 times better. One of the cheapest bangs for your buck.

Man, with all this talk, its looking like my headlight system is getting a second and third relay, lol (I've got it rigged up so the headlights are on when my heater fan is on, that turns them off when you are cranking, but on the rest of the time)

My lights were good before, I'm excited to see how they'll be after I do this little upgrade! I never even thought about doing so before

I think these will be relays number 20 and 21 or so on my truck, lol

The GMC schematic has only one 20a fuse feeding 4 headlights. For better circuit protection use two on the feed wires like the Chevy.

I've done it on several trucks.
(the summit one)

Lengths are perfect, in fact, too long. I usually cut 'em down.

A bosch relay, in 20 amps is perfect for DIY.

Jegs kit looks like it comes with better bulbs too? You don't have to change the
bulbs too do you?
