We (town fd) had the same truck in the early 90's dad and i tried to buy it, but my bid was refused (i was the only bidder) and it was gived to another FD who sold it to a waterpark. That was an awesome truck.

It's just a different kind of performance. Performance as in able to pull triples @87,000# over the mountains from Medford to Portland and back (600 mile round trip) and use 100 gallons. This is funny,I was just reading about this trucking company in Oregon that ran Chevy trucks for years. It was in a Vintage Truck magazine given to me by CG!

LOL.....there is NO mountains from Portland to Medford. It's all in the valley. You have to go East from Medford or Portland to hit the mountains. Might have been a slightly different route. Still about a 300 mile trip one way! I realize it's not significant to the story it's just funny when you live here to think of how boring that drive on I-5 is.

LOL! I must have misunderstood the article and never looked at the map. The guy said he ran 409 and 427 Chevy tractors pulling triples because he hauled out of the Rouge Valley,"surrounded by mountains,so there were 6% grades in every direction...",then later told about a time all his diesel rigs were out and a good customer called needing a full triple load to and from Portland,so he ran the 427 Chevy. I just looked again and that was 100 gallons each way!! As in 3 mpg. I guess he used the single axle gas trucks w/short trailers for local hauls up and over the hills, cuz he said hauling 80,000# those trucks spent a lot of miles running in lower gears @4,000 rpm and still got 120-150k miles between short blocks.

Truck engines are high performance, only built for a different "kind" of high performance...strong as opposed to fast

That place is only about an hour North of where I grew up in NY, it's just south of Buffalo.

Believe it or not, there's A LOT of nice OLD firetrucks in the crap load of little towns that litter the northeast. Just where I'm from they still had a couple from the 50s. When all the local FD's got in line for the memorial day or 4th of july parade, there was quite the cool collection of old fire trucks on display.

Actually, there are a couple of pulls that you have to do each way so I can see what they would be talking about. The Cascade mountain range is just to the East and that is the big 4,500 ft climb. Also very pretty country.

It kind of falls in line with the diesel trucks. Seems like the only make 400-500 HP but 2,500-2,800 ft lbs or torque. That is just amazing to me! Numbers might be a tad off but I know there is a ridiculous amount of difference.
