96 1500 a/c system in a 68 c10
will it work?
has anyone ever done it? the 68 is a non-air truck so i'd have to buy the dash bezels/vents from vintage air or someone but what about all the under-dash components and the drier and lines and stuff?? |

Not saying either way, but the '95 up system has electric mode doors. I'm not sure how much electronic stuff would have to go with it. You would have to use the '96 control panel, which may or may not require modding the dash. I'll be interested to see if anyone else chimes in.

Re: 96 1500 a/c system in a 68 c10
there's a guy with a 72 for sale that used the whole dash out of an early 90's model truck in his.
i sent him an email to see if he used all the 90's under-dash stuff--i'm assuming he did. he did a great job on it--i'll post a pic of it later. |

'95 is the first year for the new redesigned dash in those trucks. I may be wrong, but pretty sure the 88-94 have cables for the mode doors while 95-99 have electric doors. This could make a big difference in the retrofit. The 95 up are also much easier to change the heater core, you just remove an access door and go-maybe 20 minutes. The earlier ones are much harder to deal with. Would love to see photos of this type swap.

Re: 96 1500 a/c system in a 68 c10
If you can afford it-the vintage air set up is hard to beat. I have a factory air truck and with the repairs and dollars spent to keep it going, I could have bought the Vintage Air set up. I watched the 48 hour Camaro build and they installed a unit in the 67 Camaro-it was easy to do and works like a modern day set up. I went to GoodGuys at Nashville last weekend to see the car and it was a very clean installation. I will be saving up for one for my 67 Camaro and if the truck has anymore problems, I'll sell the old air system and install a Vintage Air set up. I think a system is around $1200-$1300 dollars-so pay now or pay later.....Steve

Re: 96 1500 a/c system in a 68 c10
One more thing. The 95 accumulator is different from the 96-99. The Vortec air cleaner required the accumulator to move some. I don't think that either would be a problem in a 67-72, but just keep that in mind. I believe the Evaporator is the same for both. You could probably make the later Condensor work, no idea on lines (probably not). If I did it, I'd just have custom lines made for it.

I've been wondering the same thing. Are there any cheap junk yard a/c systems we can fit in there? How about dual climate control? I would think someone surely has done it by now...anyone?
