help with700-R4
I just bought a 700 R-4 to put in my truck when I assemble it. My question is : on the driver side there is an electrical connector the guy I got it from says it is for thr torque conv. lock -up, but in the next voice he says it will lock out 4th gear. does any one know what it is for and how I should hook it up ?

700R-4
Does it have the 4 prong hook up? If so... I bought the B/M shifter kit. When I did mine I had the transmission shop wire it like the instructions said.
I put a toggle switch on the dash, so when I'm in the city I can run it without locking up the torque converter. When I get out on the road I can flip it, and over 45mph it will auto. lock up. The kit wasn't that much, I think around $35.00. I have had mine since 1987 and had no problems with it. Hope this helps.

the trans shop that built my 84 vette 700r4 put in a check ball in the case to make the converter lock up at a certain press., when driving on the freeway at approx 60mph it will lock up. havent had the chance to test it though. You must also make sure to get a converter for a 700r4.

Frank,
Lots of good info at Bowtie Overdrives. Click on Wiring Kits for different torque converter lockup kits they have. I would also suggest looking through the TV System section. All these are buttons at the top of the page. Good luck!! Bowtie Overdrives

Frank I'd make sure it only locks up the convertor in 4th gear! I love 700's but hate the third gear lock up!

And most importantly--- make sure you get the TV cable set up correctly, or your new trans won't last long!

My 700R4 came with the "check ball" installed. You pull the lock-up solenoid and it goes above the plunger on the solenoid. I ddin't like it because it locks up immeadiately after it shifts into third and then overdrive.
I removed the ball and put in a new solenoid and wired it so it will only lock in forth. I used a vacuum swith from a late 80's Suburban also. There is good information at www.bowtieoverdrives and also www.technicalevolution.com/700inst.htm I didn't hook up the brake switch and haven't really noticed a need for it. I recieved lots of good advice on the engiine and drivetrain forum when I did mine. Good Luck!

Hey Frank. I've been using my 700R4 for about 3 years now and I have not had any problems with it locking up in third once. I use TPI performance transmissions kit. It's not very expensive, ($80) easy to install (you don't even drop the pan) and works great (3 years and counting). I have a 3.73 posi rear in my truck and I wish I had gone with a 4.10. You can't go wrong with this kit (and no, I don't sell them). Here's a link if you're interested. If you aren't a transmission guy, I would definitley find one (sounds like transmission budy and a six pack timie) to help set the t.v. cable, like Mr Goodpliers (cool name) said, it won't last long at all if you don't set it right..............Good luck............Jerry
