Lower Ball joint issues...

hey guys I have a 63 C10 ..this morning I pressed out the lower Ball joint. I bought Old stock perfect circle Ball joints thinking i was ahead of the pack but they just drop in...I was thinking that to use my new 73-87 spindles I could just put in 73-87 Lower Ball joints and uppers...do the tie rod swap and be done...but...they just fall in...any idea where I failed?

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

Were the original ball joints you removed still riveted in? Or were they bolted in?

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

Yeah.....sorry.......not enough coffee in the system yet. I'm thinking the uppers. I do know that if the bottoms have been replaced multiple times I have seen them just about fall out.

I have seen many that were tack welded in.

Replacing the uppers and lowers on mine today with Moogs. Will be grinding off the rivets on uppers and getting a loaner press for the lowers and hope all goes as planned.

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

You might have to go to an oversized ball joint to correct the issue. They should be a tight fit.

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

Used stock style moogs ball joints on my a-arms....upper ones were fairly easy coming out and going in but the bottom ones...sheesh! lol Sledge hammer to get those in. But they're tight.

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

You will want to rent the ball joint press from your local parts store. It will press the old ones out and also install the new ones. Made the job a breeze!!! J

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

This appears to be the oversized lower ball joint that Carquest shows since that's where you posted the last part coming from. I'd double check though just to be sure. It wouldn't let me punch in anything older than 1975, so I used 75 c-10 chevy 5.7l as the reference. #505-1021OS (oversized)

http://www.carquest.com/webapp/wcs/s...8682?acesApp=1

I also use Red Locktite on my lower ball joints. I've never tacked a set in personally, but have heard a lot of people who have and have seen quite a few done that way.

No problem. You'll get it resolved in the long run.

I was thinking I might tack them in...the guy at the parts store said the oversized one crosses to the ones I already bought....not sure if that's the computer talking or not

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

Carquest shows 505-1021 for the standard lower and 505-1021OS for the oversize. Whats the original part # that you got?

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

I ran into this decades ago where the oversized one were still not tight in the arm. It was suggested that I take the arms to a welder who could run a weld bead around the outer edge of the hole, which would cause the hole to shrink smaller. Sure enough it worked and never had a problem after that.

Just another idea to throw out there.

No, the underside of the arm. Flip that over and the lip that the ball joint presses into, around the outside of that (not the area where the ball joint actually touches).

Re: Lower Ball joint issues...

Moog web catalog says it should be a K6023. Moog tech support says the K6023 is part of their problem solver line. It is made OS to compensate for the wear in the lower control arms.

Good Luck!

Installed the Moog K6023 yesterday and all went well using the press from the parts store. I could not imagine doing it with out it. Gonna do the passenger side in the fall when it cools down.
