dipstick length
i bought a dipstick from LMC and it was too long. it would make a ticking noise with the engine running thanks to hitting the crankshaft. i removed a 1/2 inch off the end of it, and then it stopped making the noise. i want to make sure i'm putting the right amount of oil in there so if some others can share some measurements
its a 350 the dipstick was 19 1/2 inches before cutting, now it's 18 7/8 inches from red line to red line ![]() the fill tube was 6 1/2 inches ![]() Last edited by matthufham; 07-25-2006 at 09:28 PM. |

Re: dipstick length
something doesn't sound right. maybe you should go to a chevy dealer and get a dipstick and tube. I think they still sell them.

Re: dipstick length
The next time you change your oil, pour in the correct number of quarts of oil and then file a mark on your dipstick. That will be your full mark. If you stop one quart short while filling, that would be your add mark.

Is the lower dipstick tube (the one that extends downward into the oil pan) in place? It keeps the dipstick from flopping around inside the pan. |

It's not necessary to remove the oil pan but you must remove the curved dipstick tube to install it. It's not a tight fit - It will slide down into place with little effort. |
