Help with oil pan removal.............
Can someone tell me what this is and more importantly how do I move it out of the way to remove my oil pan?...I'm doing this job right now and the pan gets hung up on this thing, can anyone help?
If I undo the bolt i'm pointing at will that remove it. Thanks in advance.

the thing you are catching on is the oil pump pickup. the bolt you are pointing to is the oil pump bolt, remove it and the oil pump and pickup should come off

when you remove the oil pump I believe theres a teflon washer sleeve that will break and youll have to replace it but theyre like 3 bucks and always available at the parts store

there should b no need to remove the oil pump to get the pan off// once the pump is removed then you've got the distributor issues down the road on reassembly

with cdowns. The pickup screen & tube should just pull out of the pump if you twist it back & forth a bit.

with LockDoc 99.99%...though i have seen people throw a little tack weld on the pickup tube b4

You should be able to pull the pan without taking off the oil pump or the pick up and tube.
See if rotating the crank to get the crank arms up and out of the way will help or take out the center motor mount bolts and jack the engine up a couple of inches - slide a block of wood in between the motor mount and frame to leave the motor up while you change your pan

Before you jack up the engine take the fan shroud loose or the fan will hang up on it but yes if you haven't already taken the motor mounts loose and raised it a couple of inches do so.
Dropping the oil pump won't upset the distributor on a Chev small block as the distributor gear drives off the cam and the oil pump shaft fits in the bottom of the distributor. Where you might run into a problem at reassembly is getting the oil pump shaft to bit back up in the slot in the distributor drive gear. That might take a bit of effort to get it in the right position. From reading your first question this old auto shop teacher thinks that it would be prudent for you to head to the local book store and pick up a copy of "How to rebuild your small block Chevrolet" as a reference guide. |

DOH!!! I removed it....I only just cleared up my tools and came in and saw all these other replies. Leon I tried pulling that pick up off first but it was not for moving and at that time I did not know if it even was supposed to come off...Dam! and jacking up the engine was not an option either as the truck is on wheel ramps and axle stands so I could remove the Tranny. Thanks all you guy for chiming in on this, seems I was a bit to impatient, Michael can you post a link maybe of a parts store that would have that Teflon sleeve, I doubt i'll find that here in the UK.
By the way I wanted to show you all what was laying in the bottom of the pan....I hope there is nothing important in this bent and broken junk. Thanks for all the replies and help.

looks like there are parts of pushrod and maybe valve locks from previous problems???? Or current problems??? Was the motor supposed to be fresh? Pan does not look like it was....

I would just get on NAPA online or CSK online. Its a real common part to replace and found at just about any auto parts store, I didnt see you were in the uk. Wouldnt they have it wherever you got your oil pan gasket? Sorry I couldnt help you out more
