i keep tearing up my starter. i checked every thing it looks to be str8. but the fly wheel doesnt seem to line up with the gear in the starter. the fly wheel is half lined up with the bushing at the end of the shaft for the gear in the starter and half lined up with the gear. and its breaking the nose cone after about 4-5 days of use.. any one have any thoughts. my step dad(previous owner) said he shanged the fly wheel and tourqe converter. but doesnt remember how he did the starter. any help would be great. thanx. w.

anychance he put the flywheel on "backwards"

no he may not have...but now that you say that. the guy that help me put the drive train togeather may have....hmmm.

check your timing .. an over advanced timing situation can snap nosecones quick .... dont ask me how i know

so if it is on backwards...how can i tell looking at it from under the truck?. this may be my problem since it is only off by an 8th of an inch. thanx. w.

okay a few more questions. whats the way to shim a starter. how do you measure or decide where and how many shims you put in?. i think i way need to retard my timing also. becuse when its breaking them. itll go to start studder, then break. so i think they may get it..we will see tomorrow.

when i shim my starter i start with i shim and start it u can get shims at any parts store to put them in drop the starter and put the shim in between the starter and the block. to check the flex plate where the flex plate bolts to the torque converter should be flush no gap hope this helps

i understand how to install the shims..but how do you know if you need one,two, or half and where the half goes?.

Get a 1/8" drill bit and use it to set the gap between the flywheel and starter shaft. Most new starters come with a rod for that purpose.

Here is a pic of the flywheel when I removed the engine from my truck. Its still bolted to the engine. Hope this helps.

thanx for all the help guys. i hope its an easy fix like adjusting the timing,which after thinking about it, it may be. when i put a starter in flush to the blockno shims it works fine for about 5 days maybe a week. then one day SNAP!! . were gana tear into it tonight or wed. thanx again.
