carrier bearing question

i have to replace to carrier bearing in my 66 lwb c10 how do i figure out which bearing i have . my whole thing is shot rubber and all. please help. pics would help im chevy stupid.

Is it the whimpy light duty one that hangs from the top of the trailing arm crossmember, or is it the 'D' shaped heavy duty one that sits on a plate on the bottom of the trailing arm crossmember?

if you're wanting to put the same thing back in there, your local NAPA or auto parts store should be able to get it.
The NAPA here had one on the shelf.
Just told them the year and model. It ran about $34

It makes for a good excuse to change out those old universal bearings too

I don't believe it's just a matter of buying a HD one instead of the regular one either. for one thing, I believe the HD ones take a shaft with a slip joint. You really don't need to know the size, as Joe750 said. I've bought them 2 ways: complete with new hanger, assembled; and just the rubber/bearing. you're going to have to take the yoke off the rear of the front shaft to change the bearing out.

Oh yeah, and I don't know how you're going to go about changing it... but your life will be so much easier if you take the whole driveshaft out in one piece and get it out from under the truck.

There's two small U bolts that connect it to the rear end. Remove those, unbolt you're carrier bearing from the crossmember, and slide then slide the whole thing off the tail shaft.

The carrier bearing will be sandwiched between the shaft and intermediate yoke on a short splined shaft. Definitely easier to do out of the truck...

One important thing to remember is to mark the middle yoke and the driveshaft tube before you take it apart, so it goes on the same position when you put it back together. You could put it back together out of phase, or in phase but 180 degrees off how it was when it came apart. It is balanced in the position it was before it came apart. Put it together the same, and there won't be any vibration or balance issues.

I thought it only went together one way, here's the one I put on mine, IIRC the shaft had a corresponding "wide-spline":



and, Woog, I think the HD one needs a rear shaft with a sliding yoke but I'm hoping Captainfab (or someone) will verify when they respond to your question
